Welcome to UKCS.

Have you looked at the site reviews for Spain? You may find something which takes your fancy there. Otherwise, where do you think you will get to the first night after leaving Santander ? Try putting Santander and Barcelona into the ViaMichelin itinerary finder, and see where you could get to after a suitable driving time.

Hope this helps. We haven't done this route, so don't have any sites to offer. Sorry!

Depending how far you are travelling you could stop at either:

De Haro or  Camping Ciudad at Zaragoza

Hi there, have done bilbao to vila nova tugging a caravan and done it in the same day.  Equally, we came back from vilanova to santander and stayed at Haro. it's a nice site and a nice area to explore. As you're in a motorhome you may want to get further down towards barcelona, or, depending where you're heading to, straight there.

Hope this helps, either way, have a good trip and enjoy the country

Jan

I think that to be of any meaningful help to the op you need to explain that somewhat confusing post further.

Barca is well known as "bandit country", wild camping around that area runs the very real risk of being robbed. There are numerous accounts of tourists being waved down, or even crashed into to make them stop and then being robbed. The police do not seem interested in catching the culprits.

The original poster has not indicated any desire to wild camp in Spain. He is asking for recommendations for a campsite proper! midway on his journey.

He hasn't asked about wild camping or Barcelona!

Why do other members ( happybonzo) and ( naebother ) post info on wild camping!

Both countries are beautiful and have lots to go for.  You may have 3 weeks but that will soon go, believe me. lol. It depends on what you want to do with your time. there are lots of people who just want to get to their chosen destination and stay in that area and there are others who like to travel around.  Are you going outside of high season?  If you are, think about getting an ACSI card as these offer reduced site prices outside the high season and are very good value for money. If you're going early in the year then Portugal will be warmer than Barcelona.  We will be in vilanova which is not far from Barcelona in March for 6 weeks and the weather is just getting to be nice and warm.  Hope this helps. Happy travelling. Jan

We went into Spain for the first time last September so have less experience than a lot of people on here.

But FWIW, we spent some time in the Pyrenees, which we found fantastic, the sites we stayed on were Camp Gavin, in Gavin (a Camping Cheque site) after that we moved to an ACSI site near Ainsa, Camping Pena Montanesa. Ainsa is a medieval village with wonderful views/buildings and very picturesque. We enjoyed the Pyrenees very much. From there we went east and stayed in Sitges, just to visit Barcelona by bus. And from there we went north and stayed on the Bay of Rosas for a week, another area we really liked very much.

We had also been made aware of possible "bandits" etc, and were alert at all times whilst travelling, however, pleased to report nothing happened. We travelled back into France on the main road, not motorway, just before the border there is a shopping area etc., where we saw a number of motorhomes and cars/caravans parked up. Whether this would be an area where it would be safer not to park, I don't know. But it struck us as being a possible target area for our criminal fraternity, ie unattended vehicles etc. But that is only my view of course.

Last winter (feb/march) we went to Spain from Bilbao and travelled to Zaragoza to overnight. The site is clean and tidy with big hardstandings and is used a lot by Brits as a stopoff point. It is however quite tricky to find, so make sure you have good directions before you go. It was a lot cheaper to book through the CC&C as a transit site. We went on from there to Benidorm to a rally with the CC&C. Again rally rates are a lot cheaper than direct bookings with the site. On the way back from La Manga we had booked to stop over at Haro, and were panicking a bit as it was 380 miles and if it was very windy we would not be able to go faster than 40mph towing the van, and the wind had been VERY strong and gusty. Luckily the wind dropped the morning of our departure so we made it after a full day of driving. Now with experience we would not plan to go so far again in one go, but Haro is a very quaint town worth a visit, seems to be living in the 1950's with shops with counters and assistants, and storks building nests on the roofs! The campsite was fine, and within walking distance of the town centre. It was a centre for bodegas with at least 8 or so to visit, so you may want to stop there two nights to visit to wineries?

Jan

i have been with my motorhome to spain in sept, well yes and no,i visited for 10days in early september last

and travel only to my site only 25miles from the port,it was my first trip abroad with the van,

and loved the site so much we never moved.

But this time i would like to see a little more,i started this thread with the intension of

traveling east ,but the more i read portugal seems more inviting to me,

The roads from santander to barcelona seemed very easy,( one direct route,(motorway )

which seemed the easy way out.

Please tell me if anyone know what are the roads from santander - portugal  are like,

whats the weather like in early June, recommended sites ect.

Hi Alan

It's just as easy to come out of Santander and head for Portugal.  If you're heading for the Algarve the route we have used more than once. If you want to stick to the Autopistas then Burgos-Madrid. Madrid-Seville. Seville straight to the portuguese border.  Also, agin from Santander head to Burgos- Salamanca-Caceres-Badajoz again over the border to Evora and again down to the Algarve.  See if you can get a copy of the Caravan Club Europe book, it will give you a host of sites to choose from.

We have stayed at Haro, a nice site and we will be there again January for a couple of days.  There are a couple just off the motorway at Burgos and there's a good o/nighter at Salamanca but I can't remember the name.  There's a good site at Caceres and another good one at Evora. From Evora, it's only about 3 hours to the coast.  One of the biggest sites is camping Albuferia and it's not that far from the town itself.  It's very nice area and being in the middle of the Algarve you can get to most of the place around the area.  We have caravanned in Portugal 6/7 times, the last time being earlier this year.  Going in June means the weather will be quite hot. I'd say around the mid 20's.  If you'd like any more info, just ask.

Jan
