My wife and I want to visit the WW1 battlefields in N France & Belgium next June in our caravan. Ideally going for 4-5 days and staying on just one site. Any recommendations gratefully received.

ACB,

If you are just making a general visit the Ypres (plus other places) are fine.

If you are tracing family members it is best to find which cemeteries/memorials you are interested in and choose a site central to them.

The driving distances can be long because many of the side roads in the

Somme/Flanders areas are quite narrow.

I have stayed at several sites in the areas i am interested in.

Vivier aux Carpes in Seraucourt le Grand is handy for the southern somme as there

are good main roads close by.

If you google the somme/first world war or french tourism site they will have sites

listed.

If you require more info please ask.

Terry

We have stayed here and can recommend site.

http://www.campinglesbreuils.com/index2.php?lang=an

This may be of interest and both Forts mentioned are well worth a visit.

http://www.ww1battlefields.co.uk/verdun/douaumont.html

There is an excellent underground Museum at Albert.

We stayed here for Arras, Cambrai, Albert area

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/t/La-Paille-Haute-Boiry-Notre-Dame-6349.htm

This site is much nearer the Ports, Verdun may be too far for a 4-5 day visit.

Both of the above sites accept ACSI card.

Do visit the Thiepval Memorial.

http://www.firstworldwar.com/today/thiepval.htm

It is a very moving experience to visit these battlefields, but more people should make the effort to honour all those who died.

I fully agree with bowler re places to visit.

Others i would mention are the Canadian Memorial and trenches at Vimy Ridge,The

Ulster and Newfoundland Memorials also the French site at Notre Dame de Lorette.

The whole of Verdun is a living museum with many walks you can do and Les

Breuils is an excellent site for visiting

WE also stayed at Le Paille Haute this summer. It is quite close to the motorway so is easily got to.
We visited Vimy Ridge, they do an hour long tour that takes you down into the underground tunnels, really gives you a sense of what it was like - terrible.
Also visited the Ulster Tower and the Theipval Memorial, both worthwhile.

Also ACB,

If you are using a satnav there is free download available on the GPS passion

website that covers the majority of the cemeteries/memorials.

The battlefield guides by Major and Mrs Holt are very helpful and include maps

We used the map of the battlefields by Major and Mrs Holt, found it to be very good. Bought it at the visitor centre at the Theipval memorial.

We stayed at Etaples, which has a large cemetry next door to the municipal camp site. Etaples I think was one of the main rendevous points during the war for new troops.
