Our first camping holiday in France was one week in the Dordogne, followed by another on the West Coast at Cap Ferret near Arcachon.  We've been back many times to the Dordogne, but never back to the West Coast!  Another clue there!

I know lots of people love the West Coast, but as Huw says, we found it very flat with uninteresting scenery and miles of pine trees, the sea was very rough, and we actually witnessed a young mother being pulled from the sea by a rescue helicopter.  Sadly she didn't make it, but it did put us off and we've never been back!

Me also - my post sounds more negative than I meant it to.  

My adult sons now go to the West Coast every year!  This year they cycled from Cherbourg to Biarritz, and then did some surfing.  Usually they stay in Lacanau Ocean.  We've also mentioned a site on that coast where we fancy a few days, so this may be our first revisit!

I would just advise anyone to watch where the lifeguards are - and take absolute notice of the flags, only swimming when it's allowed.

Back to the original posts question about the sea being suitable to swim in.

I know from personal experience that the entire main sea line (Bay of Biscay) coastline south of Royan down as far as Biarritz has a very strong south to north current which makes it unsuitable for swimming in unless you are a very strong swimmer.

I would only head to that area for surfing/boarding, if you look at the meterogical data the vendee has better weather. I would prefer to head towards the med for weather and scenery.
