I'm researching different areas of France for next year's holiday but as yet have not really looked at the West coast (south of La Rochelle). Wondered if anyone could help me with the following.
Is there enough to do and see there for two weeks with two children?
The weather looks as if it's prone to thunderstorms at the end of August which is when we'll be going, so what's the weather really like?
How long would it take from Calais towing?
What is the countryside like? Is it flat, or are there hills and lakes?
Is the sea too rough for swimming, or are there areas where you can go in the water safely?
Any other general info, eg good sites etc would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Sally.

We normally go to the Gironde pennisular which is the bit above Bordeaux. Nice area if you want a beach holiday & a cycle track network. If the weather behaves itself it should be mid-high 20s. sometimes cool onshore breeze. Storms are generally at night. Evenings are usually cool. Nice climate if you don't like it mad hot.
No hills but there are lakes with beaches. The sea beaches have plenty of lifeguarded areas where you swim between the flags. Allow 2 days from Calais for an easy drive & keep the toll costs down. You can do it with almost no toll with reasonable roads.
Weather is statistically better in Gironde dept. Landes dept down to the Spanish border can be a bit stormier.
I've not been there for several years - clue there
Some of the beaches on the Cote Sauvage are well named - as is the Grande Plage on the Isle d'Oleron.
I think this coastal area is about as uninteresting an area as you will find in France - but the beaches are to die for [hence the large number of lifeguards]
Our first camping holiday in France was one week in the Dordogne, followed by another on the West Coast at Cap Ferret near Arcachon. We've been back many times to the Dordogne, but never back to the West Coast! Another clue there!
I know lots of people love the West Coast, but as Huw says, we found it very flat with uninteresting scenery and miles of pine trees, the sea was very rough, and we actually witnessed a young mother being pulled from the sea by a rescue helicopter. Sadly she didn't make it, but it did put us off and we've never been back!

Oddly - having said I wasn't a fan I am probably going back this year - but only because 2 teenagers are planning on putting surfboards on the roof.
We did go there for a number of years - the beaches towards the sea up the estuary from Roayn are safe but extreme care is needed sometimes up by the big lighthouse [Phare de la coubre?]
Me also - my post sounds more negative than I meant it to.
My adult sons now go to the West Coast every year! This year they cycled from Cherbourg to Biarritz, and then did some surfing. Usually they stay in Lacanau Ocean. We've also mentioned a site on that coast where we fancy a few days, so this may be our first revisit!
I would just advise anyone to watch where the lifeguards are - and take absolute notice of the flags, only swimming when it's allowed.
As I recall, if you go to Biarritz/Bidart in summer a lot of cloud can come off the Pyrenees in the mornings to spoil the sunshine. Bit too commercial for me these days - prefer the rural or mountain scenery to the coasts but kids and sun worshipers love beaches.
Back to the original posts question about the sea being suitable to swim in.
I know from personal experience that the entire main sea line (Bay of Biscay) coastline south of Royan down as far as Biarritz has a very strong south to north current which makes it unsuitable for swimming in unless you are a very strong swimmer.
I would only head to that area for surfing/boarding, if you look at the meterogical data the vendee has better weather. I would prefer to head towards the med for weather and scenery.

We have been to the Vendee and stayed at La Tranche Sur Mer. We have been very lucky with the weather both times.
The beach at La Tranche is OK for swimming. There are also beaches further along the coast most with lifeguard presence.
Thank you so much for all of your very helpful replies. I think for next year we might give this area a miss. Our boys are not yet old enough, or strong enough swimmers, to take advantage of the surf, and since we really like mountains/hills with interesting scenery I'm not sure that there would be enough to occupy us for two weeks. Having said that, the idea of flat cycle paths is quite appealing, but I can't justify a two day drive just for that. Might try it when the boys are a little older and fancy trying some surfing.
