We went some years ago - two nights, on a journey through France and then another night in a different year. We had a good pitch overlooking the lake, and an excellent meal in the restaurant, but I thought the area around was a bit lacking. Langres is nice, and there was a great Napoleonic parade and re-enactment when we were there, but there's not much else in striking distance (or not that we found). I don't think I'd want to make it my 'main' site, but we found it ok for an overnight. It's used by an awful lot of overnight stayers (as we were, so I can't complain) but that would be one reason I wouldn't choose to make it my main holiday.

We stayed for one night a couple of years ago and agree with Val above that it is heavily used by overnight stayers. There was a huge queue outside the gates from 4pm onwards and those that couldn't get on the site just parked their campervans outside. This meant that the restaurant and bar were heavily used and we had difficulty getting a meal. There was a pizza takeaway but you couldn't sit outside the bar and eat the pizza so we ate in the restaurant. We had a walk down to the lake and had a drink in a bar nearby which was nice. Our overnight pitch was pretty poor but as we were only there one night it wasn't really a problem. Nice site however. The lake looked good for children and you could swim in it - we didn't as although it was August the weather was pretty poor and wet.

If you're just staying for 1 night then the campsite inside the walls of Langres is good, and you have the benefit of the interesting town to explore, shop and eat.

Jill, we went a couple of years ago and didn't like it. Very small pitches, the people at recepion were quite frosty and there's not an awful lot to do nearby.

We used it as an overnight stop once. Allocated pitch was very muddy as they had,had a lot of rain. Given an alternative which was better but not large but OK for our purposes. Nice location but not a site I will rush back to.

We went last year, late august, with a tent. The place wasn't full, and the pitches nearer the entrance were used for overnighters, but the ones further in had plenty of people there for up to 2 weeks, many returning from previous years, and were therefore quiet. We had a lovely view, good sized pitch and the pool facilities were great. Admittedly the weather was fantastic, which always makes things seem good, but the facilities were of a high standard, and the people very friendly. We only stayed 3 nights, and agree there's not much to see in the area (but Langres is lovely and the lake below the campsite has lots of swimming and sailing etc activities). See my review.

The second year we went they had allowed a group who had just trained in circus skills to entertain us. There is a field you can camp in as well as serviced pitches. I quite like the site but not for more than a couple of days because there is nothing much to do there.
The last time we stayed there we used it as the starting point to get to Switzerland.

Agree with most of the comments above. We have stayed there a couple of times, once for longer than we planned as I had a bad back and had problems depitching. The site allows people to leave from 7am in the morning, so if you are unlucky, as we were one time, the nearest overnighter started preparing to leave at 5.30am -not funny when you are trying to sleep.
Can I suggest an alternative. Last year we stayed at the Kawan Resort Lac de Orient just south of Troyes both going south (4nights) and on our way back north (6 nights). It is a campingcheque site, (www.campingcheque.co.uk ) and so is very reasonable for out of season. As it only opened in 2009 (I think) the new shower block is one of the best we have ever come across. Indoor and outdoor pools and free wifi (at the bar) all add to it. Lac de Orient itself is just across the road from the site and is huge with a nice flat promenade back towards Mesnil St Pere. The site is used as an overnight stop but is well worth a longer stay. Excellent place for cycling if that is your thing as its quite flat.
Drawbacks. Restaurant is a bit more like a cafe and fairly expensive (although there are a couple of nice - but not cheap restaurants - within easy walking distance) and the nearest large supermarket is back towards Troyes (21 km).
Hope this is of use.
John
