Hi
Very excited as just booked 4 weeks at 2 different sites in the Vendeee France. Just need to know what adaptors we need to hook into their electric supply.Plus are we not allowed to take our gas bottle into the tunnel? Is it easier to buy locally and then leavce behind what we dont use?

Have got travel insurance, car breakdown, trailer tent covered insurance wise by caravan guard so think they cover breakdown. Have been to France in gites and statics many times but first time in our trailer tent which means we can go for 4 weeks.

Looking at credit cards for money etc..anyone else got any advice?

Thanks!

Gas bottles are allowed through the Tunnel, they may ask you to prove the bottle is turned off.

For purchases I always use my credit card Nationwide or Halifax Clarity cards are recommended, don't use a credit card for cash if you can avoid it.

If you take Campingaz 907 bottles you can exchange them in France, if you are taking Calor bottles you can't, so make sure you have enough to last you the trip, if you are just cooking on gas & running fridge off ehu, 1 full Calor bottle should last you. Yes you can take them thru the tunnel.

You can use your normal ehu lead, but you may need a 2 pin French adaptor. Just go to your local caravan shop or Halfords & ask for a 'French ehu adaptor' Ignore any talk of 'reverse polarity' it does not apply to modern electrical equipment used in a camping situation.

Deb,if you look on e-bay,you can buy a complete electrical conversion kit for below £20.It comes with continental adapter, polarity reversing lead, circuit tester and adapter plug. The circuit tester will tell you if you need to use the polarity reversing lead or not.As for gas, check with Euro Tunnel for the maximum size of gas bottle they will allow you to take. The thing I have been led to believe is you can gas bottles through dependant upon size, but if you have had your vehicle converted to L.P.G.( You have to leave it behind.Only joking ).they will not allow it to use the tunnel.

I have already said Gas Bottles ARE allowed through the Tunnel. We always take 2 full (80% is full) 7kg Calor gas bottles in the caravan with us.

If you are still unsure read THIS

As for spends we took the Thomas Cook cash passport last year, basicly it's a pre-loaded mastercard, got a superb exchange rate which just about cancelled out the cash withdrawl charge which is only about 2Euro per transaction, the charge is only for cash not purchases, but to be fair never used it for purchases just cash, anything over 50Euro we used the credit card fuel etc, I have a Capital One card that I only ever use for Diesel normaly mostly for work so the balance always gets paid of in full each month, so no interest charges, that worked a treat as purchases even with the embedded comm still worked out at the going tourist £/Euro rate, somthing to do with the business rate exchange rate I was told. And finaly for those pesky Autoroute tolls I used a Telepeage Tag which I share with my brother and a another family, we all use it, fantastic idea as it means you don't have to que at the tolls ever, and the final bill does not get debited until over month after you get back from your holiday. happy days.
