I'm looking for a region/campsite to spend 10 days with the kids in late July.  We will have had 10 days in the Dordogne.  I'm happy for it to be a two day drive from the Dordogne, with a stop in the middle.

We need, a good pool complex with stuff for a 14 year old and a 10 year old.  I like some culture/history to see.  we enjoy very easy canoeing.  I like fairly easy access to supermarkets but this isn't a deal breaker! Sea is nice but not essential.

I don't want to do anything too hilly. and vertical drops freak me out a bit so I think the Tarn region is out! 24

Any ideas, oh wonderful, Kind people???

The Ile de Re might be of interest if you do fancy the seaside. A very interesting place to visit with La Rochelle just across the bridge (rather hefty toll so might not want to take too many trips back over the bridge - although a regular bus service is good for day trip to La R). Great for biking (easy to hire), great beaches and wonderful sunsets. Camping Interlude at Bois Plage en Re might fit your bill.

Or The Ile D'Oleron which doesn't charge a toll for crossing the bridge!

Do your canoeing on the dordogne, vezere, lot and then - when all canoed out head for med Nr argeles. Considerably more history than the Vendee/Medoc [especially if you day trip to the cathar castles]and better weather too

My kids had lots of fun at Le Soleil BUT - traffic in the area is 'une catastrophe' after 0930.

Helen - it is possible to see the Tarn Gorge from a flat road along the bottom - absolutely no vertical drops - and it does make spectacular viewing even without going up on high.

There are also loads of activities for kids - though some of those might involve heights, I suppose.  You can canoe there too - an entirely different experience to canoeing on the M25 of rivers, which is the Dordogne!  There are lots of sites, and our friends (teachers) have found pitches without problems in late July/early August.

Access to a supermarket - well there's a little 'market' shop in Riviere sur Tarn, and plenty of local shops, and then a choice of hypermarkets in Millau, with a great (not particularly touristy) market twice a week too.

When we were in the tarn area we met a couple who planned their day trip so as to always be on the mountain side of the road rather than the sheer drop side

We'll be doing the dordogne this summer also then moving on down to the Bilbao area of Northern Spain.  There's some great beaches, especially at Noja - see camping playa joyel.  Big drive back if your're going via tunnel/channel ferry.  We'll be doing the ferry from either Bilbao or Santander.
