We did a bit of a tour of Europe last year in our Landrover 110 staying at a few campsites along the way. By far our favourite one was in a town called Werfen in Austria. This town has a really good campsite with a good sheltered area for tents - only cost us 4 euros per night!
Werfen is where Where Eagles Dare is filmed - you can look around the castle which is amazing, and visit the ice caves too. We used it as a steppingstone to visit Berchtesgarten just over the German border (eagles nest)
Austria seemed cheaper than Germany and oddles cheaper than either France or Italy.
Amazing place!!!

It looks Gorgeous. I love Austria, although I have stayed in hostels and mountain huts when I have been. It would be one of my first choice destinations and I intend to take the rest of the family (who have never been) in the caravan one year.
Austria is a lovely country and we have been a few time and visited Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna plus of course other parts. Perhaps your second picture is not such a good advertisement

Would love to go to Austria, but thought it would be expensive. When you say cheaper than France, what exactly is cheaper?
Before they joined the Euro I think it was more expensive particularly food but now that is a similar price to the rest of Europe. Diesel tends to be cheaper than Germany. One thing to watch in their supermarkets is their special offers especially where if you buy a second item you get both at a lower price. They tend quote the lower price rather than the individual price so when you get to the check out when buying one you can be surprised how much you have paid. On the plus side we were in an Austrian supermarket in 2009 and we were discussing what product to buy and two people. separately, asked us in English if they could help, well impressed.
We found it cheaper than France in most areas. Firstly, the actual campsites seem to be much cheaper. We paid 4 euros per night for a pitch, whereas in France, and Italy we paid around 30! I'm sure that you could find cheaper sites, but I was going with places that I knew so that if I had car troubles (landrover!) i could get parts.

Before they joined the euro they had the austrian schilling and I remember going there when the exchange rate was almost 20 schillings to the pound. Almost like using old money.
Austria is our favorite and have been visiting it for 7 years now. We love the Southern Lakes and Mountains best but also the Tyrol is wonderful. Austria is much cheaper than most countries in Europe. This past Spring Fuel was much cheaper than anywhere, Food whether to buy in the shops or eating out is very very reasonable. People seem more friendly than other Countries in Europe. If we were 10 years younger we would buy and live out there 6 months of the year. We always stop at ACSI sites and they are mostly 4 and 5 star. Germany is very similir and our 2nd favourite. I have written a page on each country on my website to give other caravanner and campers an insight to them. Click on My Homeage top left hand of this post..

The alternative is travel to the South East for Dover and Folkestone for Ferry or Tunnel. We always use the Tunnel but not the cheapest this year in Apri it is £197.

We are using the tunnel in May. It is £140 for car and passengers (no van). We paid for it entirely with clubcard vouchers. 2009 we used an overnight crossing from Harwich to hook of holland. Again paid for with vouchers. The overnight crossing meant driving off the boat totally refreshed.
Sometimes what looks like the cheapest option may not be, by the time all the costs are added up.
I tend to look at all the options and unless there is a significant difference, go with whatever is the least hassle, in my opinion anywhere that avoids the M25 at any time of the day is the best way.
