It looks Gorgeous.  I love Austria, although I have stayed in hostels and mountain huts when I have been.  It would be one of my first choice destinations and I intend to take the rest of the family (who have never been) in the caravan one year.

Austria is a lovely country and we have been a few time and visited Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna plus of course other parts. Perhaps your second picture is not such a good advertisement

Before they joined the Euro I think it was more expensive particularly food but now that is a similar price to the rest of Europe. Diesel tends to be cheaper than Germany. One thing to watch in their supermarkets is their special offers especially where if you buy a second item you get both at a lower price. They tend quote the lower price rather than the individual price so when you get to the check out when buying one you can be surprised how much you have paid.  On the plus side we were in an Austrian supermarket in 2009 and we were discussing what product to buy and two people. separately, asked us in English if they could help, well impressed.

One way of doing it would be to take an overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam.  That would leave 600miles wjich could cbe split over two days.

Wouldn't be the cheapest option but might be more interesting than driving all the way to the south west of England.

We are using the tunnel in May.  It is £140 for car and passengers (no van).  We paid for it entirely with clubcard vouchers.  2009 we used an overnight crossing from Harwich to hook of holland.  Again paid for with vouchers.  The overnight crossing meant driving off the boat totally refreshed.

It all depends how much cost is an issue.
