Hi, We are thinking about driving down to the South of France for a few weeks during the summer.

We have a car with a trailer and my question is this:- If we stop at B&B's on the way how can we make sure our trailer and everything in it doesn't get pinched? We could stay on sites on the way but the tent is quite big and takes a good while to put up.

Would appreciate any advice or tips please

Many Thanks

Sarah

In the past I have used the B&B Hotel chain, their hotels are fenced with restricted access overnight.

Alternatively buy popup or other small tents for overnight stops, cheaper than hotels. No shortage of overnight campsites on the way down & no need to book.

Hi Sarah.
July last year we did 4 overnights at "Premire Classe" budget hotels, we prefer them to the B&B chain, main reason is that most are adjacent to a Campanile Restaurant/Hotel were you can get 10% of your evening meal as they belong to the same group as "Premire Classe".

Anyway we overnighted at Dunkerque (Armbouts Cappel) and Chalon-Sur-Saone both going to the Southern Ardeche and comming back, all the hotels had secure gated parking with CCTV although I do manage to get our car parked close to the room, and still hitched to the car, I do this as I have two quite loud motion senso alarms fitted to the trailer, so I like my rig to be within earshot, anyway below is a list of my trailer security bits and bobs, fact is you can't eliminate the risk of theft but you can reduce it, also we have the trailer and contents insured, it all helps me get a peacefull nights sleep.

13" Wheel Clamp.
Box section Hitch Lock.
Embedded hitch lock.
17mm 3m heavey chain.
3 Yale high security padlocks 10mm shakle.
1 CISA high security square lock 17mm shakle.
Motion sensing Alarm/Siren sounding padlock.
Motion sensor Alarm/Siren inside trailer.
Locking wheel nuts on trailer wheels.
Spare trailer wheel locked on.
Locking ABS Trailer lid.
Locking trailer tongue box.

All the above does mean I have a total of 10 keys for trailer security, so if it does ever get nicked it won't be for the want of trying lol.

Andy.

Hi Andy, may I ask you what make/model trailer you have?  You seem to know a lot about them, thanks.  I'm on the lookout for a trailer and want an ABS cover as I'll plan to use it for year round storage of camping gear.  I'll use it for camping trips in Europe. Thanks.

Hi Humbird.
My Trailer is a Lider Alicante which we bought new from Redcap Garage at Blackburn who are the main if not sole UK importer?., they did me a very good price as I was having the towbar fitted by them at the same time, went for the 13pin Euro Cam-Bus coded elecs, that was back in November 2009 when the VAT was still at 15%.

The reason I went for the Lider is that they are more robust than the Erde/Daxara offerings imho, and size for size are quite a bit cheaper.

The Trailer is a 13" wheel type, which I wanted as I was going to be travelling at speed, we also opted for the ABS lid c/w RoofRack, the RoofRack can take upto a 100Kg quite handy should the need arise, as the Trailer is an "A" frame, I added a "Trailer Tongue Box" which I use to store two 907 CampinGaz cylinders along with all the security stuff, Bottle Jack and tools, can't tell you how handy that "Trailer Tongue Box" has been.

The bigest challenge was getting hold of locking wheel nuts, to establish that, I found a 4" bolt that had the same thread and pitch as the trailer wheel studs, with that I found that bizarley my trailer has the same size and profile wheel nuts as a Porsche 944!, the rub was that StopLock only do the locking wheelnuts in packs of 4 which was obvious of course, but they did set me back £25!.
