You may want to think about being west of Caen for WW11 history. This will be more central than say Le Harve.
Three sites come to mind and are Municipals. One is in Bayeaux and the other in Arromanches. The first one is on the edge of Bayeux town centre. The second one is right in town and close to museums. There is also a municipal at Sainte Mere Eglise a bit further west and near to Utah beach. Anywhere between the three and you wont have to far to travel. Municiplas will work out a lot cheaper than commercial sites.
Around 50 sites close to Caen, there is a Municipal campsite at St Aubin Sur Mer rated as a 4 Star, also listed as "Camping Qualitie" which is a good sign.
Grab a copy of "Le Guide Officiel Camping Caravaning" which lists 10,340 Campsites in France, with plenty of Municipals listed.
Also go to "Archies" website, if you have sat-nav, and download them as POI's to your unit, that will sure help with finding them.
Hope that helps

thanks for the help ,would i have to book these or could i turn up on the day, the reason looking at le harve area was having to ride down from scotish borders to channel tunnel then long ride from calais down to Le harve area i think my backside will be feeling sore by then.reason for tunnel you have more leeway on times than ferry .
At the end of May you won't need to book a campsite at all - you'll find space everywhere, especially if you only need a tent pitch without electricity. You may find yourself the only person on a site - another contributor to this forum did a solo trip last year, and at some times was on his own - and that was in July/August!

If you are on your own and fancy a "chatty" sort of site, end of May, you might fancy Camping du Brevedent. Restaurant if you don't want to cook, Freddo the chef is a biker, Bar at night is quiet so you generally get to chat with who is in. Presume you are fluent in French or Dutch, but if not English will do. If you happened to play a musical instrument you 're well suited.
Frequently there are 1 or2 bike campers at that time of year, no guarantees of course. Just a frustrated tyre kicker who has left his Ajay 350 , and Matchbox 600 at home to be with the grandkids.

Arromanches is 80 miles approx from the ferry port at Le Havre by the most direct route and about 85 if you go through Bayeux. The road is a fast road if you go through Bayeux but a bit slow if you take the cross country turning off at Caen.
If you have a free standing tent, like THIS or THAT I have over-nighted (discretely) at Bénouville - Pegasus Bridge and then onto Arromanches the next day. I have also over-nighted in the field at the back of the car park at Utah Beach I will add "no facilities " but if you are used to motorbike camping you should be able to sort out your own personal admin
This will start you pretty well at the most eastern end of the invasion beaches.
BTW - try and avoid the Café at Pegasus Brdige as it will cost you a fortune for just a cup of coffee
