If you are thinking of camping in the South of France on or near the coast then pitches are notoriously small and some may not fit your tent esp if it's one of those octagonal shaped ones with pods sticking off it. Some friends of ours had a LOT of trouble finding a pitch big enough (down the very South of France).
Castels sites usually have decent sized pitches with some being HUGE.
For the rest of France, I would say you'd have no problem. But once you've found your perfect site, ask again as someone is bound to have been :)

French pitches are usually quite generous however as CaddyClan says they get a bit smaller nearer the beach! I would say that on average they are at least 100sq mts.
A reasonably sized pitch would normally be 100 -120 sq. metres and invariably seperated from others by hedging. Some sites are "open plan" but few and far between.

Yes I agree they are generally generous but even at a big commercial site there was a Nebraska XL with front porch and side extension (or was it the other way around?) who ended up pitched on a grassy area next to the shower blocks between pitches because the odd shape of tent didn't work with even 140m2 pitches! We had a 200m2 pitch and they said they couldnt have pitched it on ours either because of the hedges on 3 sides
We were in the Vendee last year at Le Pin -at Le PIn, I would say you would have no problem at all.
However, we looked around a few of the sites on the coast (Le Pin is 15 minutes inland) and some of the pitch sizes we thought were tiny - some were only just big enough to get our caravan on, never mind an awning or car! We didn't wander round the whole of each site so maybe pitches further away from reception were bigger but we decided never to try one of those coastal sites for that reason.

Most of the sites we've booked with have asked for our tent dimensions in order to provide a suitable pitch.
Pitches in the south do tend to be smaller in my experience though. The last site we stayed at we had a biggish pitch but it was long and narrow. As has been said, find a site you like and ask on here or email the site to ask.
We have always had huge ones, but when reading reviews on here have seen some that are crammed together, so best to do your research first, you could also email the site and check
