We were there last year.   After ferry at Calais we drove about 5 hours to Chartres Municipal.  Next overnight was about 5 or 6 hours down the road  to stop at a site in Uzerche then about 4 or 5 hours the next day to Camping Natura (about 12 miles from Argeles Gazost).  We werent in any great rush and stopped off regularly for the dog.  The area is stunning and the site is probably one of the prettiest and cleanest I have ever been on.

- I've aimed for Camping Natura a couple of times and not made it for various reasons. It looks spot on .

We are planning on going to the Pyrenees in June.

We are looking 2 stop overs on the way down.

We were going to stay at Camping Natura then we found out there is a Club Rally on at the site in June starting roughly on the same day we would have arrived, so we will pick another site, thinking of International at Luz St Sauveur at the moment its a Camping Cheques site.

We were there for the Tour de France last year.  We stayed at a really nice site in Carcasonne, near to the walled city (can't remember the name but it's in the Alan Rogers guide).  I can thoroughly recommend the ancient walled city for a good day out.

Then we wild camped on the Tourmalet just outside La Mongie and the scenery was stunning.  Nice places to visit in the Pyrenees are Luz St Sauveur and the Gavarnie Cirque, Foix and even Lourdes if you're into that sort of thing.

If you can afford it, take the ferry from Portmouth to Caen because that saves a lot of driving and the route down is far prettier.  We've driven right down in a day, but it's better to stop off and enjoy places like Poitiers and Bordeaux.

The Pyrenees is a beautiful area without a doubt.

In answer to driving it can be done in one hit - between all the ports there is only about an hours difference if you stick to the autoroutes. Car only it takes about 10-11 hours without stops.

I have done it twice recently - Ariege to St Malo took about 11 hours with stops and to Calais it took us about 12 1/2 with stops sticking to the speed limits.

Hope this helps.

If you want something Basque you could look around here http://www.sare.fr/heb09/listecamping09.asp

Sare is fantastic if you want to sense a bit of the Basque culture. Go and watch a game of pelota, and taste the Basque food. Biarritz and St Jean de Luz are well within striking distance, but at Sare you are in the hills, and the scenery around is superb. The campings are basic, so don't expect any frills, but we were happy knowing what to expect. Tellechea is a charming spot but again 1 star says it all. The sanitares however were spotless, and no problems. It is mainly for tenters, although we were in a caravan. this was the scene of one of my latest gaffs. Could n't find a chemical toilet disposal point, cos there is n't one, so thinking to be considerate I asked Madame if there was a " French " toilet for the purpose, aka Turkish,  I was told in no uncertain manner that ALL her toilets were French. Point being they were in fact standard flush, but I had missed the Basque dispute.

Fabulous area but certainly not everyones cup of tea.
