Woke up today, noticed our milk was from Jersey and decided I would like to go camping there this summer. Dont know anything about ferries or campsites. All I know is that we will need to drive from Glasgow and will have to have an overnight stop each way to the ferry terminal.

WE have two young kids, so would like somewhere where they are likely to make friends/go off and play etc; Plan to drive and take bikes so car fully loaded. Dont want to fly.

any advice on which route to take, which ferry to take, best place to book ferries, and any good campsites would be a good starting point for me

I know it is not strictly camping abroad, but as it invloves ferries etc thought this forum would be the best place.

As far as I know, your only choice of ferry operator is Condor, with fast craft services from Weymouth and Poole, and conventional ferry from Portsmouth.

If you're a member of the C&CC check if they can give you any discount on the fare.

Have a look on Camp Site Search for reviews of several sites.

Yes, it is "abroad" - Jersey may be in the British Isles but is not in the United Kingdom, or the EU, which may have implications re health insurance, for example.     Check Jersey's website for clarification.

yes condor is the only ferry operator to do the jersey run.

as stated the fast ferry (about 4 hours) goes from waymouth or poole. or the conventional ferry ( about 9 hours) goes from portsmouth.

but the ferries go at different times on each day. so if you're planning to sail at a cirtain time you , will have to sail on the day it goes at that time.

like us , we've booked for 8 days to sail out on a mon and back on a tues. as they are the only days that have around midday sailings

stu

i got a £25 dicount with the c&cc.

thanks for the advice. I read that the fast ferries are very bumpy and lots of passengers suffer sickness on the crossing. I dont want my two kids to start thier holidays puke-ing up and dreading the crossing back.

Does anyone have any experience of these crossings by superfast ferries and how it compares with the slow boat?

We have travelled on the fast crossing with Condor, with two young children and had no problems.  Possibly if you get a very rough day or are prone to seasickness it might be different!

We werent camping, but planning for the future we looked round a couple of sights.  My favourite had to be Rozel Camping, nice quiet site but with a small pool.  We like the north coast best anyway.

I believe the best price on the ferry will be through the campsite, as they can get special fares.  They also have ready erected tents.

Jerseys great - feels like you are in France - with no Euro!

We've used them several times and the only occasion we've felt nauseous was when, following a delay caused by a fault with the navigation system on departure from Weymouth that morning, the service was still running late when leaving Jersey and the crew had to load vehicles and foot passengers at the same time, to beat the tide, resulting in vehicle fumes entering the passenger lounges from the stairways from the cardeck. I think this was an isloated incident.

If you're still concerned, ask the advice of the booking office staff who will allocate your seats, subject to availability of course - you may prefer the centre of the lounge area to minimise the effect of any roll, or you may be happier to sit by a window.     If you need any fresh air, as far as I know you could use the
(unallocated) seats on the open rear deck.

Rozel is definately one of the best sites on Jersey, we stayed there 2 years ago with out family for two weeks. It is not comparable to a French site but it is nice and the owners are very friendly and helpful, it is a short walk to Rozel bay where there is a restaurant and a pub. From our pitch we had a view over to France which was nice. Due to the size of our van we had to do the long crossing which was pretty awful a really long and fairly rough crossing in July, nothing at all to do on the boat which is tiny and the samll cafe on board is only open a few hours for food. It also stops in Guernesy on the way there so extending the journey further. We had a day cabin which made it just about bearable. I really would put up with a few short hours on the fast crossing!

We've booked 10 nights at Rozel for August and got a good deal on the ferry crossing because we booked this through the site. We're going on the fast ferry, leaving Weymouth at 6:30am so are staying over in the Travelodge at Yeovil the night before (£19 for a family room if you book early enough). All in all 10 nights for three people, including crossings for £550 so about half the price of a trip to France. Can't wait!
