hi all,

I am thinking of going to Germany in the spring and was wondering if you had any ideas on where to go?
I am after some small, not too crowded spots, Baltic Sea would be ace. Do you have any suggestions on a camp site there? Ideally where they speak English as well since my German isnt the best.

We are also hoping to visit the Baltic Sea coast this year and in the main we will be using the ACSI Card. English is quite widely spoken in the old West Germany but not widely spoken in the old East. If you go to this website http://www.eurocampings.co.uk/en/europe/ you can find which sites expect to have English speaking reception staff during the main season. We have been to quite a few German campsites and only found a couple where there was no English spoken.

Chipping in here, do you mean a SatNav? We have a TomTom and have used it in Holland (they're made there so it works a treat there!!), Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Italy. All without a problem, other than of course the occasional "blip" when it tries to take you via a road you wouldn't dream of taking, but that is the same as over here.

But even with a SatNav, we would never travel without a map, always check the route it wants to take you anyway and check instructions from campsites on the route they advise to take. I don't know what unit you have, it is not in your profile, but this is especially important when towing or with a motorhome, in case of height/width restrictions, low bridges etc.

We always use a Sat Nav, but as Ina say its always a good idea to check the route against a map as sat navs can take you down  unsuitable roads. You can download POI's for vitually all European campsites here http://www.archiescampings.eu/eng1/

I notice that David's first link (ACSI) has a Great Little Sites search facility.

Remember though that many ACSI-listed sites are not in the ACSI discount scheme.

Hey monkey, the blatic coast is amazing. I'll have to try and find the name of the campsite we stayed. I at ve got it written down somewhere I'll try and dig it out for you.

When you say GPS do you mean for use in the car, or do you mean for a handheld device such as this?

Hi,that d be great if you could let me know that spot at the baltic sea.I really look forward to that trip.
Also, since I am a keen biker and hiker, I am looking into a GPS I can not only use while driving but also while doing outdoorsy stuff. I have thought about the Garmin you mention but am not sure if this is good value for money and reliable. What do you think?
I have had a look at loads of sights like this one but have found them all quite confusing since I dont know that much about technology. Would be great to hear some advice. Cheers!

We got the Garmin Nuvi 255W last February from Amazon at £99 delivered, EOL now.

It worked a treat in France last year, with the Garmin you get 60 days in which to update the maps to the latest version for free, quite handy when you think that a sat-nav fresh out of the box may have maps that are a couple of years or more out of date.

Recently we down loaded Archies Camping France and all the ACSI sites, they are now in the unit listed under POI extras, which is great as my little Garmin has now got over 10,000 campsites in it's memory, fact is most of the ACSI campsites came pre-loaded in the Garmin in anycase.

Fact is that sat-navs are getting better all the time, what ever the make, my advice would not to spend silly money on one.
