Hi, just planning our route to and from Spain, and viamichelin is suggesting as an alternative route the A26/E15, which seems to loop around to the east of France, through Lyon and Dijon and then up through Reims.  The driving time it suggests is less than the A20 route going west of Paris and not much different to the A75 straight down through Paris and Clermont-Ferrand.

This seems a bit odd to me - does anyone have any experience of this route, and any idea whether these are accurate timings?  It's slightly more expensive on the travel costs, but if the timings are accurate we would consider driving back this way as we have never seen that side of France and would be interested for future reference.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The route you speak of past Lyon etc. is all autoroute & reasonably flat. Considerably more in tolls tho. It is the route used by a friend when he drives a double manned coach non stop to Barcelona, so I guess its the quickest route.

If you use this route Fri/Sat Jul/Aug holiday season you can get standing traffic anywhere Dijon dowards as its a main route used by German/Dutch holidaymakers.

Hi

We have used this route the last 7 times that we have been to france and found it the most straight forward route. Yes the traffic can be bad but we have only had bad traffic once and that was in rush hour about 5pm.

Always use that route. Its about 50 miles further but much easier. You probably use more fuel going the other way up & down those mountains.

For years we used that route as it was the most direct to the Med. From Lyon south it can be very busy in the summer. As has already been said it is very expensive in terms of tolls. As you are going to Spain I would consider the A75 route as that drops you down to Beziers. Although I like the A20 its not as direct for where you are going. According to MSAutoroute there is only 50 miles difference between the two routes.

The traffic in Lyon is a nightmare in the summer we have been badly caught in the past. This year we are going from Cherbourg to Barcelona and we will go towards Bordeaux, Toulouse etc avoiding travelling on Saturday. But Reims, Laon, Troyes and Dijon are well worth a visit.

Last year we travelled to Spain via Rouen, N154, A75 and returned via the A26, E15.  We would recommend this as it gives the oportunity to see more of France.  Going via Rouen is cheaper in toll charges than via Paris.

Regards Bob

Thanks for all the replies.  We've previously gone via the mountain pass into Northern Spain (due to our stopovers and over several days) and come back through Paris (albeit accidentally as we were heading for Rouen!).  This time we're aiming to get to Spain with just one stopover.  I'd rather avoid Paris, although it's more direct - driving through accidentally with no preparation or map last time kinda scared me!  That said, the OH would like to go via Millau, so maybe we will take the A75.

It just seemed odd to me that looping all the way round to Lyon was a viable option, as it looks like it should be a lot longer.  We're hoping to have two stopovers on the way back due to ferry timings, so we may well take that route back.  Curiously, having gone back into viamichelin this morning it is now saying the A9 not the A26.

We're travelling down Monday/Tuesday mid August and coming back midweek at the end of August/beginning of September, so hopefully the traffic won't be too bad!

What part of Spain are you headed for? I usually take Eurotunnel and then down to Rouen (your sat nav may try and take you through town) Le Mans, Bordeaux and then San Sebastion, it's nearly all motorway and takes about 20 hours from Edinburgh (we always leave at 4pm and drive through England at night) you can enjoy the Basque country and don't miss Galicia

By far the nicest way is on the ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth, but it is slow and Expensive

We're headed for Alcossebre, about halfway between Barcelona & Valencia.  I think the route you're suggesting is pretty similar to the one we took two years ago, but then we were taking a more leisurely trip and staying at two places on route, one of which thatwas close to Pau on the French side.  Absolutely loved the drive through the mountains, but thought it would be better to stick to the more "French" route this time, if you see what I mean, as we are literally just trying to get there as quickly as possible.  I'll have another look at your route though, and see how much difference it makes.
