Short answer is no. I have been told that you can park on the sea front, but I have never tried it.

Seafront on Marine Parade is the accepted place, but you have to pay if you stay during the day. Alternatives are to stay at the Canterbury park and ride site, where they have dedicated spaces, but I much prefer to stay over in Calais at the aire by the beach - baguettes available nearby and  the best restaurant in town overlooks the chemical disposal point! Also you can stay at Cite Europe in the motorhome parking area.

I also recommend staying in Calais.
I've not heard great stuff about Cite Europe, but last year we stayed in the car park of an Auchan hypermarche in Calais and had a very peaceful night -   here's my thread with lots of helpful replies, including a very handy map to find the Auchan!
We'll be sleeping there again this summer. Last year we arrived at around 2am, there were a couple of campervans there already and by the morning another two had joined us. Handy for breakfast, too!

Yes, stay at Calais by the beach. As your ferry arrives in between two piers the port is on your left. But look right and you'll see the sleepover place, And the best restaurant Brian's Dad mentions is called Cote d'Argent. Worth a stop over to eat there.

Is this a safe place given all the gas attacks, muggings etc. Also would it be acceptable with a caravan.

The parking place mentioned is only for motorhomes & you are supposed to pay a parking fee at the camping municipal behind it. If you want to park with a caravan after leaving the ferry late at night there are a number of possibilties. You could go back into the dock, head towards the checkin & bear off right into carpark, plenty park in there, or you could get going for a bit & go off into a town & park in a supermkt car park as suggested.

If you are going towards Boulogne the services about 15mins down motorway is safe enough, plenty park there as well.

The talks of muggings, gas attacks, and so on is a lot of 'urban myth' for the most part.  Yes, there are occasional problems in occasional places but generally not on the scale suggested by some of these posts that you read which makes France out to be bandit country for all caravanners!

Take sensible precautions with your valuables - hide anything of value away where no one would easily find it - not (as always seems to happen in these stories on the table in the caravan - where people seem to leave everything of value they own).  I've read of laptops, cameras, wallets, passports and money all being stolen without the occupants realising!  They certainly couldn't do that in our van as everything is tucked away well out of site!

We sleep over every holiday (twice a year) on the Aire mentioned by Tentz, above, or on the Aire de la Baie de Somme, and once on the dock at Calais, years ago.  Yes, it's fine with a caravan, and you'll be joining the dozens (or hundreds) of others already parked there!
