The talks of muggings, gas attacks, and so on is a lot of 'urban myth' for the most part. Yes, there are occasional problems in occasional places but generally not on the scale suggested by some of these posts that you read which makes France out to be bandit country for all caravanners!
Take sensible precautions with your valuables - hide anything of value away where no one would easily find it - not (as always seems to happen in these stories on the table in the caravan - where people seem to leave everything of value they own). I've read of laptops, cameras, wallets, passports and money all being stolen without the occupants realising! They certainly couldn't do that in our van as everything is tucked away well out of site!
We sleep over every holiday (twice a year) on the Aire mentioned by Tentz, above, or on the Aire de la Baie de Somme, and once on the dock at Calais, years ago. Yes, it's fine with a caravan, and you'll be joining the dozens (or hundreds) of others already parked there!
