Does anyone know what it is like to stay in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland and what is in the village in the way of entertainment. Pubs, bars, etc. We are going next week and I am now wondering whether to change from a campsite in Interlaken to the one in Lauterbrunnen.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Not much in Lauterbrunnen, just a couple of pubs but train service is good up to Grindlewald and Wengen where there is loads of nightlife and lovely bars and restaurants also cable car up to Murran and quite a lot going on up there at this time of year..
Manor farm caravan site in Interlaken is a good base with bus service to rail station and into town, the site gave us a free bus pass when we were there or cycling in Interlaken is easy.
its a lovely area and Im sure you will have a great time, take plenty of spending money !!!!
We stayed at Lazy Rancho in June 2008, and used the free bus pass to travel into Interlaken, then got the train to various places like Lauterbrunnen. Not much there though, but you would cut down on travel time to other places, as it took about half an hour to get to Interlaken, and the connection was not that good, ie the train departed about 5 minutes before the bus arrived, and the next one was 1/2 hour later, same story going back.
We were at Interlaken briefly last year and stayed at Lazy Rancho, wouldn't stay there again all perfectly decent etc but very tightly packed in. We wanted to stay at Manor Farm but they wanted a 3 night stay minimum in August. Interlaken town is beautiful and I would visit again but it was one hell of an upward trek so I'd definitely do at least a week there next time.
Have stayed at the big one in Lauterbrunnen. In summer 2 years ago.
It was a fabulous place for scenery & right in the middle of all the train/tram connections. The site had lots of info & could sell tickets. I have to admit we spent a small fortune on the train up the JUngfrau. Only go on a clear day but it was oh so worth it. If you are prepared for the ticket prices & like walking its fantastic. Trains & cable cars up both sides of the valley with wonderful scenery.
To be honest didn't go out in the evening and already have most food supplies. Lauterbrunnen certainly looked as though it had places to shop/eat/drink & the camp site diditoo. Ah remembered..camping Jungfrau...Eurocamp use it. Nice site. 2 downsides. 1.In a valley with steep sides it lost the sun early. 2. not like French sites where you pay for your emplacements & put what you want on it. We paid for 2 adults 2 kids campervan AND extra for 2 tiny pup tents they sleep in. Although we did just turn up & were lucky to squeeze in.
On balance if you just want a day trip for the scenery stay down at Interlaken with the Lake and every thing. If you love mountains Lauterbrunnen was a great spot
Thank you so much everybody for all your replies. I think my sons would not have been happy to be stuck in lauterbrunnen without much nightlife so we have booked on a campsite in Interlaken as there are no winter sites that I could find in grindelwald. Interlaken seems a good place as it's central to everything but a little extra travel for them to the slopes. I think they will prefer this to being stuck miles from the hustle bustle which young ones like. Anyway thank you again to everyone for taking their time out to respond, you helped me make the right choice I believe.
Just sat at Dover writing this before we board.
