We are planning a trip of several weeks to France with our tent and prefer to stay non-electric. Do French sites generally have the same ice-pack freezing facility as we have on our sites, please? Any advice most welcome, thanks.

Some do, but by no means all - especially on smaller sites.  Have you particular campsites in mind - someone may have stayed there, and be able to help.  Some have 'rental' coolers or fridges, but of course this is of little use to you if you don't have electricity.  Mind you, sites without electricity are few and far between - even the smallest municipal sites generally have electricity to every pitch.

I'd also add that you might rethink the electric issue - our friends camped for several years without an electric hook-up - then one year we lent them our portable fridge - and they said how much easier it made shopping, and keeping things.  They no longer needed to do a daily shop for milk, meat, pate, etc - and could actually keep butter without it running away into liquid.  If it's your first time, and you're going any time after the start of April, and are heading south, then you may seriously underestimate just how hot it might get and how your ice packs may be not as efficient as they are at home.

I don't think you will have a problem, most sites will drop a Fridge outside you tent for around 5Euro per day, and charge you about the same again for the Electric, with that in mind it may be worth taking an EHU unit and Cooler with you, especialy for the length of time that you are going for, the kit will more than pay for itself.

Just about all campsites in France have EHU these days, it's just another revenue stream for them.

Any site that sells ice cream at the office. will usually put your packs in he freezer for about 3/5€ per day. Only the most toffee nosed would refuse. The idea is almost universal, and in France it is very typical to put a bottle of water rather than the blue things, then you can take one immediate and not have to wait for your fancy pack to freeze.

The price of a fridge on the site we use is 20 euros per week and 2 euros per day for electricity and as previously mentioned you probably save that in fuel/hassle of shopping every day and trying to keep milk/butter fresh (oh and fridges are notoriously good for keeping beer and wine cool i have been told LOL) - i am surprised to hear of leccy being charged at 5 euros per day. i understood that sites were not allowed to 'resell' electricity and must provide it at cost, though perhaps some sites find a way around that?

Many thanks for all your replies, which have been very helpful. It will be our first camping trip to France in over 30 years....so we are a bit rusty! We are planning to set out mid-May, travelling down through the Burgundy wine route and then over to Annecy to explore the region there.

We will bring kit for EHU as suggested - just in case.
