Well we got hooked on camping in France about 15yrs ago.....its a vast place and each region has it's own charm.

If we want to relax near the ocaean and cycling everywhere, we tend to go for the ATLANTIC COAST nr BORDEAUX..afab camp site called 'Le Tedey', this is nestled in a forest and is gorgeous.

If you want be in the heart of the BURGUNDY wine region and take in a few historic site, try Savigny-Le-Beaune. Beautiful village within walking distance and all the charm of an advert for Petit Filoux !

For something completely different the RHONE ALPS, gorgeous. We drove through Belgium, Lux', Switzerland and camped in Chatel and La Cluzas last year, it was pure magic.

The French are CAMPING friendly, so you will find something wherever you go. The only areas I have been disappointed in are BRITTANY (too many Brits), so we excaped to the Loire valley nr SAUMUR, and the Cote D'Azur (too warm, too commercial and very expensive), we went into Northern Italy, then up through the mountains.

It's Avignon for us this year, so I am breaking a personal rule by going to a very popular region, fortunately we have plan B in place if plan A goes pear shaped.

Just gen up on your French language skills, this comes in handy if you want to get off the beaten track and warm to the natives.

Also, if you live in the North, the ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge negates the need to go nr the M25....expensive but well worth it.

Bon vacances

Forgot to mention. The sites in the camping books are only the people who are prepared to pay to advertise. Often there are lots of small campsites who do not apear in publications.

Tourist Information notice boards usually display sites.

Or you could buy the app for your SATNAV with campsites located.

TIP: SATNAV in France is a saviour, especially if you end up in a one way system in a town.

I am passionate about France and the French culture, so if I can be of any further assistance.

Oooh and almost forgot, the municipal camps sites can be great, their star rating systems are quite different to ours...2 star can be gorgeous but with no pool and no childrens play area which is no loss.

BEWARE sites with FLAGS at the gate, this usually means it's like Butlins...I am awful, but I am hard to please and have rarely been stuck, other than Brittany (another story but we pitched 8 times in 2 weeks) Its a bit like going to the Pooley Bridge,Ullswater on a bank holiday weekend...anyone who has done this will know my drift.

Forgot le Chantepie nr Saumur is a great location, and not far from the lovely town of Saumur. going up the river is the small village of Cunault, the abbey is incredible...well al round there is lovely. If ever we are in this region ,we make for Le Chantepie, it is on a plateau of land overlooking the Loire river.

Enjoy.
