It's not a problem, you only need to delare if you have LPG/Petrol fuel system.

They have only asked me if i was carrying any gas once, last year when the automatic check in wasn't working. I just told them i did have a calor bottle and yes it was turned off, there was no problem. I've taken a tin of coleman fuel and a full 2 burner stove tank and small tins of campingaz too. Never had any problem. They do pull over caravans and check they have the gas cylinders off.

Like people have said above - no problem with camping fuel.
As for everything else it's so much quicker and convenient than any ferry - especially with kids.
