This will be the first time we take the dogs abroad.  OH is already muttering about the weight of food we might have to take!  We feed them the dry food, James Wellbeloved. I am ignorant as to what is available in France, can anyone clarify/reassure.  Would we be advised to take from the UK?  What's the cost comparison?

I've never seen James Wellbeloved but they have Pedigree, Chappie and stuff like that. I get something called Frolic which I haven't seen here but our cocker loves it. It's a sort of moist dry food.

Dogs are popular enough in France, the supermarkets have plenty of shelf space for pet food, most of the popular brands you see here. Cost is similar to UK. If you want stuff like Spot-on, its generally a bit cheaper. You will find it in Pharmacies.

Good dog food is available widely in France & we have always found something in Spain without too much problem.

In desparation by cheap cuts of meat for your dog but we never have had to.

We feed our dogs Eukanuba and we have it shipped from the UK as it is half the price to do it this way.

OMG!  Does it really make that much difference?

As for buying meat and feediing them.  We'd still need biscuits of some sort.

I suspect that we'll take some from home I may have to smuggle it in the van....  and maybe have a look at the Frolic mentioned above.

Unless they're exceptionaly fussy eaters there is plenty of choice on the continent.  Have you noticed how many languages the packets/tins are printed in?    I've given our dogs a varied diet from scratch so they will eat most anything.

Hi I live in the Netherlands and we always travel with our dogs. To avoid foodproblems, we give them a mixture of different brands and we have always been able to buy the right stuf.

For the Frolic you will have to know that that contains a lot of salt. We use it as a special treat because our dogs love it as well. But you shouldn't feed it as a meal for a long period of time.

You can have a look at most major supermarkets on line, and see what they have in the way of dog food - then see which ones have branches around where you are staying.  Carrefour here, for example  Click 'Chien' and then 'Croquettes' for dry food, or Pates or tins.

All the supermarkets we have used have sold  Pedigree tinned and dried

food,Biscrox,Dentastix, marrowbones etc.Prices were about the same as UK.

The brand Frolic has been fine with our spaniels and also own brand dog biscuits.

In Italy we have used Aldi/Lidl own brands and that has been ok.

We take our Arden Grange with us, I'm quite big on giving ethical food so Pedigree would be a big no for me.

If you decide to give your dog a complete change, it would be wise to 'wean' your dog onto it gradually rather than a drastic swap.

I measure out my dogs portions into sandwich bags and count the meals required and add an extra 3 or 4.

Frolic seems to be a great food. I use it as "bribes & treats" rather than buy stupidly over-priced dog treats.

I go to France for the food:  Should you deny your dog the delights of Aliments pour chiens avec des escargots or even Aliments pour chiens avec des cuisses de grenouilles et de sauce à l'ail

I think I'd prefer to take their 'normal' food from home.  I'd hate to find something else upset their stomachs (a good possibility with a sudden, complete change) & not be able to buy their normal stuff.

We also measure it out to take away & add a bit 'just in case' so we know we're not carrying more weight than we need to.

You could take your own this time but try the dog on other brands whilst there to see if they agree?  That way you'd have your own as back-up if needed & would know for sure for next time.

It's more likely to be from drinking or eating something disgusting when you take them for a walk eg today my Chap has eaten a liquifying dead bird and three mice type animals
