ok guys....we have now purchased road maps for france, spain & portugal. That's sorted. The next thing is...what sat nav to buy? My hubby is convinced we need a "snooper" that allows you to put the dimensions of your motorhome in but they are nearly £300!!!! Surely we don't need anything that fancy do we?
No, you don't and, personally, I'd be very doubtful of it's ability to keep you clear of narrow roads etc.
I've said this before but unless the sat nav knows the width of all the roads ALONG THEIR ENTIRE LENGTH, then it's no good. My sat-nav sent me down a road once which looked OK at the start but 2 miles in, it turned into a single lane nightmare
For the sat-nav to have all that data, you'd need a huge amount of memory space on your device and route planning would take forever, as there would be so much data to process (I'm a computer programmer, I know how the thing would have to work).
If you look at the Snooper website, it seems to suggest (well, to me anyway) that all it will do is route you round any fixed width restrictions (the ones where you have to drive through a set of bollards) - how often do you see those? And it will warn you (NOT route around, just warn you) of steep hills and tight bends.
I've never used one but I'd be interested to hear from someone who's got one and can prove it works - plan a route where the shortest route is down a single lane and see what the Snooper does.
On any other sat-nav, make sure you select 'Fastest route' in the settings menu - this will always try and take you on A-roads and motorways. If you want the scenic route (and you're not towing), select 'shortest route' and then you'll be taken down some 'interesting' routes
