I could, if I knew your route, what you will be driving, what time you are calling late night & whether you want a campsite or whether a motorway services or supermarket carpark would suffice?

Apologies for being somewhat vague, l am planning to leave Calais at approx. 1.00pm and drive three or four hours before stopping at a suitable roadside stop, aire etc. l'm flexible on route but tend to avoid tollroads and Paris if possible. Many thanks for your reply.

Do you mean 1.00 am?  We usually arrive in Calais/Dunkerque around that time, and usually by the time we get to the Aire de la Baie de Somme (near Abbeville) we've had enough driving.  The Aire is just off the autoroute (toll) but we get there mostly using non-toll roads, and only pay for a very short section!

There are few suitable places along the road, certainly where we would want to stay overnight, after Baie de la Somme - but others may come up with something.  Are you in a caravan, or motorhome, or planning to sleep in the car?

We do have another overnight stop before the Dordogne area - but then we're not really in any hurry, and rarely have an 'end' destination in mind!

Your best route to Dordogne avoiding Paris would be the popular route, Calais, Rouen, Chartres, Orleans & down N20 to Vierzon(avoids Toll A71 that runs long side it)& then down toll free A20.

From Calais go A16 to Boulogne & if you want to avoid toll section, go off & follow non toll signs to Abbeville then back onto non toll autoroute A28 to Rouen.

Before you get to Rouen look out for sign, 'Neufchatel-en-Bray'(J8) go off there & you will see campsite signs to this popular overnight stop

We're planning on doing this this summer too. We arrive in France at around 9pm and are planning on driving to the aire at Abbeville and stopping for the night without unhitching, then an early getaway the next day before stopping at either the municipal at Vatan, or Les Grands Pins near Vierzon. We'll then take a slow jaunt down to our site on the Dordogne the next day.
