Can anyone recommend a nice small campsite on ile de rey? We have a caravan and two small children and would prefer small, quiet, no entertainment and near a sandy beach...

Does such a place exist??

Thanks! X

Rosie

I think it depends what time of year you go. In the main season the Island is a popular destination, hence one of the reasons they increase the bridge toll during the summer. How small is smal in the sense of children, I just wonder if you could go out of the main season when most places in France tend to be quieter. We have only been to the Island once and that was in September. Last year we went to the Ile d'Oleron which is next door and we liked that but because there are no tolls on the main access bridge I expect its even busier in at the height of the summer.

Hi Rosie

We stayed on the Ile de Re in August 2009. We stayed at Camping Le Providence at the far end of the island. You can see my review here:

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2969

It was a very French campsite and not commercialised. There is an excellent sandy beach accessed from the back, pedestrian gate. It's just a matter of crossing a minor road and walking through some dunes. It may well fit your bill. The owners and other campers were very friendly and helpful. Ile de Re is a super place for cycling with lots of safe cycle paths criss-crossing the island. If you don't have your own bikes with you there are lots of places where they can be hired, including ones with small trailers for children if yours are too small to cycle.

We liked the Ile de Re a lot - it's super place for an uncommercialised, seaside holiday.

Please post again if you have any specific questions.

Tim

Thanks Tim, that sounds nice.

David, My children are 5 and 6 so I would have to go in the hols. I'm not worried about the toll price, I'd rather pay more and have it a bit quieter!

Stayed on 2 campsites on Il De Re. There is one in St Martin, good location, handy for the beautiful harbour, but........high hedges, hard ground. So its OK for one night.

The other site we stayed on was North on the Island, ;ast the salt beds. Nice site, large grassed pitches...but I seem to recall lots of seaweed on the beach..yuk!

Ill De Re is well worth a trot round, La Flotte is lovely, and St Martin is beautiful in the evening , along the harbour front.
