P.S. Also, make sure you know which meds should be given. We took our Lab to a vet in Le Mans in 2009, travelled back up to eurotunnel, then found they wouldn't let us cross because he had not administered a tick treatment on their lists. We were too late to find a vet in Calais, so had to re-arrange the crossing and stay in France for a further 2 nights (saw vet next day then had to wait 24 hours, which is minimum time after treatment). Bit of a pain!

Frontline for ticks and Drontal for worms is what they usually use,if you are afraid they won't use the correct one you could always take your own and let them administer it,most of the ones I have visited have asked me if I had brought my own.

Don't be put off, we've been a few times since and not had another problem You can check on the Defra website ,it basically states:

Tick and tapeworm

treatments MUST be given by

a practising veterinarian in

the country in which the

treatment is administered.

In particular, your pet must

be treated against the

tapeworm Echinococcus

Multilocularis, using a

veterinary medicine that has

praziquantel as its active

ingredient. The tick

treatment must be

specifically licensed for

treatment against ticks. Tick

collars are not an acceptable

form of treatment.

10. All treatments MUST be

dispensed and administered

by the veterinarian in that

country. DO NOT take

products from the UK for a

veterinarian in another

country to administer.

We just assumed all vets in France would know what to administer, but obviously it's not that simple. I think there was a problem with the meds the vet in Le Mans administered in respect of the tick treatment. The Eurotunnel staff gave us a product list at the time, and directed us to a vet who would know what to do (Christiane Petrie, in Calais).

It really is worth taking your dog!

By the way, we treated our dog with Frontline Combo before setting off for France, but she still picked up a rather horrible tick on her neck, in Nice. We hoped it would just die and drop off, due to the stuff we'd treated her with, so we watched in disgust as it got slowly bigger! A fellow camper advised us to spray it with perfume, which would irritate it - lucky I had some along with me - it worked, then we incinerated it with the gas lighter for the cooker! Yuk!

I honestly don't mean this as a scare story, more of a warning - do treat your dog before you leave as well, and take perfume, wormer and a proper tick remover, just in case!

Check out Mosquito/sand fly bites !! Animal Owners sometimes are unaware that these can be just as awful for dogs as for humans. We use Advantix which covers mozzies, I would suggest looking on the internet for info. Also even though you can give "stuff" for ticks they can still attach to a dog/cat,but I think not draw blood. My dog, last year, had at least 23 ticks over 7 weeks but  they didn't appear to live for very long !!!!! They are the most awful things and I would strongly suggest obtaining a tick removal tool  from your vet , it beats trying to remove them with tweezers or etc
