On another caravanning forum, someone has posted the following (which I thought worth passing on, generally):

Following the almost complete disappearance of regular grade petrol in Germany a while back, they are starting to phase out Super now, too. It is being replaced by E10, a mixture of petrol and 10% ethanol. The trouble is E10 can damage engines which are not suited to this additive in the fuel. Mainly older vehicles are affected, but some current models, too. Because many people are unsure of its suitability for their particular car they are resorting to the much more expensive Super Plus grade and this has already created a shortage of Super Plus (which was hardly being purchased before).

I would therefore recommend anyone coming to or through Germany in the near future to check before departure whether their car will tolerate E10.

I thought this might be useful to others.

Doesn't the 'disappearance of regular grade a while back' then 'they are starting to phase out Super too' mean that only Super Unleaded or E10 with Ethanol is available - at least that's how I read it.

Super unleaded is 98octane petrol. There is no need to put any sort of 'Super' or 'Ultimate' fuel into cars made in the last 15yrs, they will run ok on regular unleaded(95 octane).

I read it the same as you.

Lots of websites about offering advice about E10 fuel. Most of the sites do have motives behind their advice which is sometimes contradictory.

Some say E10 fuel is also widely used in UK.

Thats more how I understood it, the SUPER was the 98octane not the standard 95octane.
The super is usually 3-4pence per litre dearer.
Interestingly I know somebody who only runs their car on Shell's version of the ultimate unleaded forgot what its called now and he claims he is getting far better mpg than 95 octane.

In Germany Super is 95 octane, and Super Plus is 98, apparently. So 95 octane is being phased out and replaced by E10, but Super Plus is still available.  I've no idea what 'regular' grade petrol is, or was!

That's correct.

Regular was 91 octane. "Normalbenzin"

It will say on the pump- 95 sans plomb. Just look for the green nozzle.
