Given the wealth of experience and info I've read on this site I'm hoping you can help me. We want to visit Sorrento as part of our 6 week Europe trip but are not keen to take the caravan, given the size of sites and the roads/traffic etc.We are thinking of leaving the caravan on a site in Rome (Camping Tiber being considered) and driving to Sorrento for a couple of nights , then returning to Rome. Has anyone done this and how safe for the caravan would it be? Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Sue
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
I think the first thing you would need to check is your caravan insurance to see if that was a possibility in the first place. I think Tim and Cary and I think a few other on here have been to Sorento with their caravan and I am sure they will be able to give advice on roads and campsites if you change your mind and take the van. We have been to Sorento (not in the van) which is very nice and a good point from which to visit Capri and of course Pompeii so it could be worth a detour witht he van!
We have been to Sorrento 3 times always stopping at the same site in Vico Equense. I have just listed it in the
list of campsites in Italy on this Forum. We have never found problem with taking the caravan there the roads are not bad at all. Touring on the Amalfi coast with your car is not bad either. The site is near to Sorrento, Pompei, Naples, Amalfi Coast and Capri. Site owner is very friendly and helpful and will take you by car to the train station if you wish to go to Sorrento or catch the boat there for Capri. We took a 520/4 Coachman there no problems but would not attempt the site with a large 8 metre van. Hope this helps.
Not been to Sorrento with a caravan, but we have twice left our caravan in sites while we went elsewhere for a few days - once in Spain, once in Greece. We asked the site managers and they were quite happy for us to leave our vans there while we went elsewhere for a few days.

Sue, Have just been talking to my husband re the site I recommended to you at Vico Equense. He says he would drive there with a 7.50 metre van but make sure you do not arrive or leave on a Saturday or Sunday as we did once. The reason being all the Italians go to the seaside at weekends and as this is a little harbour they are parked everywhere for boating, which makes the last part of the entrance road difficult to negoitiate with a caravan. I can tell you it is well worth the visit. Hope this helps. Personally I would definitely take the caravan with me as if you don't know where you want to go next you have more choice to stop somewhere different without having to re-trace your steps to pick the caravan up.
