Hi guys,

I am think of getting a dog and I am considering the implications on our trip to france, Can anyone explain how it works? I have read a bit and think I understand correctly that you have to take the dog to a vets before you can get back. If so how do we organise this etc...

Cheers Christian

ok, it really is as simple as you think it is. before you go you need to have your dog chipped and go through a series of innoculations, these take at least 6 months or so, so make sure you check with your uk vet as to how long etc, to make sure you have enough time.

when you travel outwards from the uk there are no checks (though make sure you have booked for your dog to travel and paid the extra money), take the opportunity at the port or tunnel for your dog to have a toliet stop LOL. when you come back to the uk you need to visit a french vet and have a series of simple checks and some frontline etc, you must then return back to the uk within the set time period, when you arrive at the port/tunnel they will check your pet documents to make sure the dog has been to the vets - they check the stamp etc (its an admin check at this point at a specific building, not at the gate) - then if everything is ok ie you have complied with the 'rules', its back to blighty with the spoilt pooch!!

to give you some idea, it costs us around 50 euros for our dogs check at the vet - he is 55 kilos, though hopefully someone will point out a much cheaper vet somewhere!! if youre on the tunnel then you stay with your car and dog, but on the ferry you have to leave them, though because of all the loading noise i stay with him until the last possible moment.

Thanks for that Dave, so if it was a puppy it would be at least 6 months before I could travel?

If it's a pup you would be going through the normal jab routine anyway, after that you only need a Rabies jab, wait about a fortnight, go back for a blood sample to be taken, wait another couple of weeks for the result, if it's okay you technically could go to France the next day, BUT you could not come back for six months(now that is a holiday) Or you wait for six months and then go.

Vets further away from the port in France are cheaper.

Poppy's passport is almost full, I'm wondering what the vet will charge for a new one. All her jabs are up to date but she'll need a booster next month so i suppose I'll find out then.

I have heard that vets don't like starting the Rabies innoculation on dogs under 3 months old
