Santander claim to be offering a debit card on their Zero account which has no transaction charges for ATM's abroad. Don't know what exchange rate they will apply. No doubt we will find out in due course, if anyone gives a feedback.

Our approach to money abroad is to take what cash we had left from the last visit and if we need more we just use an ATM. Where possible we put things on our credit cards and pay them off when they are due, the same as if we were in the UK. We both have at least two credit cards each and our bank cards so if, as has happen a couple of times, a card is refused we always have a back up. Apart from budgetary control i am not sure I see much advantage in prepaid cash cards.

Nationwide for us too, mainly because we use it to pay for ALL our holiday spending - ferry, campsite fees, fuel, shopping, cash withdrawals, so at the end we know to the penny what the holiday has cost us (and how quickly we can afford another!).  We know it charges now, for each transaction, but you do get a decent exchange rate, so if you stick to reasonably large cash withdrawals, and then use cash to pay for every smaller item you can still end up if not quite quids in, at least a few cents on the winning side!

Yes, good thinking: However, I tend to panic when I don't have a wad of cash in my (high security) pocket so tend to withdraw a few hundred euros whenever I see a machine. This had the result that last year, I brought back much more cash than we took!  With a lot of things pre-paid and sensible use of credit cards, cash is not all that important .....
