I have read through the thread about motorhome and caravan recovery but was wondering what your views on car recovery were?
We are driving over to France with a tent for the first time and are looking for european recovery insurance for 7 days cover, cost is an issue but we still want decent cover are there any to avoid?
Greenflag is the front runner at the moment but I dont know of anyone who has used them abroad.

Insure and go do single trip breakdown insurance. They use Europ Assist which is probably the same company that Green Flag, RAC etc use in Europe. The cover is excellent, with English speaking operators and the prices are great. You buy online and print your own documents. Europ Assist has been around for at least 30 years as I used them back in the early 80's and I have used Insure and Go for the past 8 years so they are not a fly by night internet company. Only thing I have never done is break down in France so I cant give you a first hand account of their services.
We drive a renault and brake down almost every year. We use More than and always had an excellent service, everytime. Collecting car, taking it to a garage, sorting out hire car etc. They use europ assist too. We wouldn't use any one else. We've just paid £76 for a year, think it's about £98 if you want home start too.
Having broken down twice now I can say that both the companies I used were good.
First time I'd left the documents at home (don't ask) so I had to sort out rescue myself. I rang NFU who offer a pay per use breakdown cover to their insurees but they told me that they couldn't sort anything out as I was in a motorway aire. So I used one of the road-side boxes and got a lovely man who helped out. So you may well need some basic french to get help and it would definitely help to be able to communicate with the mechanic.
When we got to the garage the owner disappeared for a prolonged lunchbreak before starting on the car. He did however do everything to get me back on the road so that we could get to the ferry the next morning.
The company paid the bill when I got back even though I hadn't contacted them. We were very impressed.
Last year I had taken the documents but it was Friday evening and I broke down on a campsite. I was informed that nothing would be done now until Monday so why not keep the car on the site and get some-one out to deal with it then. When they came it turned out to be just a battery and I was jump-started and sent off to sort it out myself.
I suppose what I am trying to say is that the insurance is worth having but even though you have a company that you can talk to in english you need to be prepared to talk to the mechanic in french and that we are well and truly spoilt by the AA/RAC who would endeavour to fix it at the roadside rather than tow it. Also spoilt by mechanics who are open on Saturday.
I should be taking a different car this year - twice in 3 years with a 17 year old car is twice too many- but at least now I know what a pompe a l'eau and a branchement de batterie are, that a flat batterie is plat and how much nice thermostat sounds in french. I know far more about my car in french than I do in english!

Europ assist is second to non for health & vehicle breakdown. I can speak from personal experience of their service for both. Many insurers are only fronting for them including C & CC last time I checked. Might as well buy it direct from europ assist.

We have always used Morethan - which covers in UK and abroad (plus free caravan cover) usually costs us about £56.
Our friend also used Morethan and has had to call them out twice now for her car - once in this country the lights would not work once caravan hitched - they towed her home no problems and the second time was in france when car broke down on campsite - again no problems very efficiant kept in good contact to advise what was going on.
We now use different company only because our caravan is over 7mts
You've probably done this, but check that your general car insurance doesn't already cover repair &c.. The past several years we have chosen our insurance companies on the basis of free foreign cover - previously the Co-op (CIS), now Marks & Spencers. If you don't already have it, it might be worth asking your company how much extra it would cost?
Hi, thanks to this post, I have just obtained breakdown quote from insure and go. My question is how do you cover trailer/caravan...do I have to ring them as there is no where on online application to mention towing?
The trailer is the stumbling block. We went to Italy last year & after hearing a horror story of someone having to pay to have their folding camper brought back on a flat bed lorry after a suspension failure I started digging. Your car insurance will cover your liability for damage to others as a result of an incident whilst towing. Your trailer insurance will cover you when it is stationary. Your car recovery company will recover your car & trailer if the car breaks down or is damaged in an accident, BUT the only company I could find who cover your trailer for a breakdown such as a puncture, broken hitch or damaged suspension is the RAC. I got my cover with a little discount through the Camping & Caravan Club. It was over £100 but they were the only people who offered full cover.
