Were going to Italy this summer, though via the Newcastle ferry. Give yourself time to get there and back, and decide how far you can reasonably drive in a day, and still be safe. I set a limit at 300 miles, trying to keep it at 250 miles though, and we both take turns at driving. Its meant to be a holiday not an endurance race! Make the journey down and back part of the holiday. We are going down through Germany and Austria (avoid Switzerland, you will need two motorway tax vignettes if you go there). We plan to take time going down Die Romantische Strasse (The Romantic Road), one of the most scenic drives in Europe without a doubt. It goes through a huge meteorite crater, and ends at the fantastic Neuschwanstein Castle- not to be missed. I first drove down this some 40+ years ago on my own with a scooter and my tent.
We will come back through France.
Also consider your caravan and equipment. If you are travelling this distance, you are not likely to be stopping long anywhere, so keep things simple to avoid lots of packing. Do you really need the space heater for the awning, the extra fridge, the second microwave, just in case? Have a particular look at tyres for instance.
Don't forget to take enough gas too, you will not be able to change it unless you have Camping Gas.
