L'Etang de la Breche is a fantastic site. I have some pics of the site as well as the area on my shared photo album. Click on the link below to see.
The site has alot going for it, set in both open and shaded lands about 5 miles from Saumur, access through a barrier which closes at 11pm. Plenty of safe parking outside the barrier though, if you fancy a late night in town. The reception area is well stocked with brochures detailing the local attractions, and some outings are organised from site. Canoe expeditions are led from the site too. We were there towards the end of the season, and most of the on-site entertainment had ended. One thing that we did come across though was a travelling circus which was set up right in front of our pitch. The noise was done by 10:30 pm from the show, and we were gobsmacked to find the Big Top, all the caravans and attractions had disappeared in the night! We didn't hear a sound! There's lots to do on site including a play area for little 'uns, boules pitch, swin golf, fishing, bike and go-kart hire etc. The pool area is kept nice, there's a mix of kiddies and adult type pools there, and it all works very well. The site was well maintained, clean and friendly. Toilet and washing facilities were spotless at all times. The restaurant offers good value for money, as does the takeaway. Our kids loved the pizzas!
Saumur itself is spectacular, with the impressive Chateau overlooking the town and the Loire. It's a mixture of modern shopping facilities, and medieval buildings. There are some great places to sit & relax with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. The Chateau is only 2 Euros per person to visit. There's a tank museum, (Musee des Blindes), there's the Cadre Noir just outside town which gives shows throughout the season of horsemanship.
As Claire says, we're going back this summer with a group of friends from UK Campsite, and we can't wait.
