Has anyone purchased an Abroadband dongle and / or  sim card?  I would be interested how well it works, as I am off to Europe soon, and want to be able to use internet whenever I want, without having to find internet cafes, Mcdonalds etc. I believe it can be used in a lot of countries all over the world, without having to change sim cards for each country visited.  I have a Zoom dongle, could an Abroadband sim card be used in it? I would appreciate any info. Thank you.

I had never heard of Abroadband until I found the link http://www.abroadband.com/en/GB/simonly I suspect you will only be able to use this sim card in your dongle if its unlocked assuming its the same a mobile phone. I seems very similar in cost to the Vodafone offer although it would be better value if you can only use what you need. (Vodafone cost £10 a day with a 50MB allowance) I assume from what you say you won't be using campsites as usually campsite WiFi is often better value. If you go ahead it would be interesting to know how you get on.

Just thought I would paste a link I saw while researching a cheap way of having WiFi while abroad, about Abroadband.. Personally I am going to stick to using the free wifi on site, (or pay a little)

I bought my Abroadband thinking I would get a better deal using this method rather than paying hotel WiFi prices. I was very wrong.... I used it 4 times while in Switzerland just to check my e.mails. I didn't send any e.mails or open any attachments. I couldn't beleive my eyes when I got the bill. I had been on the internet for a total of 20 mins and my bill was 41.23 Euro. It would have been much cheaper to have gone through the hotel. Needless to say I will not be using it until the the price goes from 59cents to around 20cents per MG.So those of you out there surfing right now BEWARE!!!!

It's good to have these reports back on how things actually work!  This year we'll probably be using our computer whilst in France for the first time, and using advice on here will stick to either campsite free Wi Fi - or one of the many free 'hotspots' highlighted on a website which someone linked to recently (and which I thought I'd saved to favourites, but obviously hadn't!).  Perhaps that someone could post the link again!

Hi Val

I used a BT FON hotspot for the first time last year and it worked fine. We were a good way from the nearest McD's so I downloaded the map and the addresses of the closest hotspots. Just sat in the car nearby and it worked fine for checking emails, whats on locally etc. A bit insecure for banking chores though. Cant say I missed general surfing but then I'm an IT Technician and surrounded by computers everyday so it does me good to get away from them.

Thanks Carol:  I worked with computers too - so have previously had nothing to do with them whilst on holiday!!  However, I'm working again for a couple of days a week, and it can be done over the internet, so I'll need to be able to get access whilst away.  No banking though!

Do you need to be a BT customer?  Our line and broadband are outside the BT empire!

Hi Val. Dont think you have to be a BT customer as the idea is to create the worlds biggest free online community. I think you have to register with BT Fon though. There might be more info on their website as its 2 or 3 years since I joined.
