Hi, any tips on a camping expedition involving a car, two children aged 6 and 5, travelling from preston lancs to southern germany via rotterdam over a period of approx 30 days, no tent yet (would appreciate tent recommendations!) We'd like to have a look at Winterberg, and onto Ruhpolding which is in southern bavaria, where we stayed a couple of years ago travelling by plane from munich, but this invloves car hire and accomodation so this time thought it may be cheaper to drive and camp! Sorry to go on but if anyone has done anything similiar then do get in touch with your experiences, regards.

Have been caravanning in Germany and Austria for 8 years now. On your route down Prumtal Camping at Oberweis good for enroute stop near to Bitburg. It is listed on this website. Which way are you driving down? We are going that way on Monday and after stopping at Oberweis next near to Heidelberg down to near to Fussen and then to Berchtesgaden which is just after Ruhpolding.

Hi,

I have lived in Germany and have also toured around, Try Garmisch Partenkirchen in the foothills of the Alps, the Zugspitz, highest mountain in Germany, is there and you can go to the top by cable car or by train and you can ski here 365 days a year on the top. Also
close by is Neuswanstein better known as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang castle. Munich is only 55 miles from Garmisch and lots to see there. As previously stated Berchtesgarden which has salt mines which are well worth a visit and you have the Eagles Nest which is very close. Saltzburg is a short drive from Cheimsee, the first motorway service station.

On the route down there is a very nice camping site in Rudesheim am Rhein.

I am touring this year and will be driving from Dunkerque to a site in Belgium, from there to a site in Luxemberg and then onto Rudesheim, from here down to lake Constance through the Black Forest, from there onto Garmisch and Munich before hgitting, Austria, Slovakia and then Poland, returning through Germany and Holland.

Regards

Bob

Hi valt, we are going to Berchtesgaden mid August.  Where did you camp near there?  Did you have a good time in that area?

Cheers

Carol

I'm heading down to Austria in just under a fortnight from Lancaster, going to Zeebrugge rather than Rotterdam tho. Planning on an overnight stop at Koblenz and then another just before Munich. Will post up a review once I get there.

We have camped in Bavaria, and travel from Wigan. We would have two overnight stops to get there. It will be better for your kiddies to make an adventure of the two stops, as it is a long way. Cheap hotel, or put the tent up with just the basic sleeping gear inside, as we do.

Have a look in Go Outdoors, (one in Wigan), the tent section on here, plus the free ads, and the Outdoor Megastore web site for ideas on tents. Use it over here first. Do not be tempted to spend too much the first time round. You may hate it. Preloved is also a good source.

Jim.
