Wild camping is permitted anywhere in Norway as long as it's not on cultivated land or near people's houses, cabins, piers or other private installations (= permitted anywhere defined as "utmark" by Norwegian law). If you know who owns the land, it's a good custom to ask for permission though, but you don't have to if you're not staying more than 2 nights in the same spot. This is part of the ancient "allemannsretten" (literal translation: "All Men's Right"). Note that DRIVING in "utmark" outside of the roads is NOT permitted - "allemannsretten" is primarily designed for backpackers with a small tent. Parking alongside the road is permitted if there's no sign saying otherwise, and you're not hindering traffic or farming. If you're tent camping in the wild, remember to bring a small foldable spade to dig a makeshift latrine! Failing to do so will mean you lose your right of camping. And remember - not more than 2 nights in the same spot without asking!
If you have a caravan or autocamper / camping van with a toilet, you are permitted to park and stay overnight everywhere parking is generally permitted. Note that this is NOT permitted in Denmark and Germany (and probably most other European countries) - all overnight parking there should take place at camping sites.
