Hi reen
Piriac is a delightful fishing town. It is VERY popular with the French, so much so that we were once told that the population of the town is about 2000 but in July/August it goes up to 20,000!
We used to go every year and hardly ever saw any Brits. It depends on what you mean by "real French camping" as the campsites in the area are hugh, the one we used to go to (Parc du Guibel) now has 200+ pitches, a lot given over to mobile homes and cabins etc. There are some lovely beaches in the area, some within walking/cycling distance of Parc du Guibel but it is out of the town. Nearer the centre there are a couple more but the do get booked up very quickly (or at least they used to)
I'm afraid I can't comment on Penestin as we never went round the coast in that direction. Personally I don't think I'd choose to say at La Turballe.
With regard to "what do you do if it rains" there is a lovely aquarium at Le Croisic.
I hope this helps, it is a lovely area.
Gill
