we ve been getting prices for ferries to france and le havre seems best deal at moment never crossed to there before - crossed to caen a few times and stayed in campsite near to port - last year crossed to calais and stayed on the port which we found great - can we do this in le havre or are there any cheap safe campsites or places to stop overnight close by looks like we ll be arriving at 2130hrs and leaving at 0900hrs in morning(on return ferry).

great thanks for that just tried website but i think theres a problem with it but ive managed to get a tel no off the le havre tourist website so i think ill ring them tomorrow to try and book pitch - we toying with the idea of driving through night - we both drive going to the dordogne its about 420miles but we've got a longish crossing and will only have driven just under 3 hours this side so dont know whether to crack on with journey taking it in turns to sleep as our 8 year old son will then sleep most of the way and when we arrive at site friends of ours will have got there the day before so well be able to get a couple of hours sleep then

any ideas.........

Hello Alyson we have just booked Portsmouth to La Havre. We set off at 15.00 and get in at around 21.00. I think it will be 21.30 or later by the time we get off the ferry, I have been looking at some sites for the night and the only one I can find on the internet is 29 miles away that site closes at 22.30. We have decided to stay at the port overnight, and set off early next morning. My 8 year old daughter can sleep on a washing line so no problem there.

do you know if you are allowed to park overnight on the port in le havre? if you can this is what we would do as we would prefer to leave about 5 in the morning to start our journey and most campsite barriers dont open until about 730. the campsite mentioned above le foret de montgeon is very near to le havre from what i can gather - but i couldnt get into website when i tried. we stayed 2 nights on port in calais this year (one at start & one at end of holiday) and had no problems with any of us sleeping and found it much easier.

Hello Alyson. I have not done this route before, but I am told by one of my work mates that have been several times. He says they is no problem at all staying on the Port for the night, he does this going and coming back. The only problem he says is with the lorries staying on the port. It is quite easy to get blocked in until around 6.30 am when they leave.

definately going for port much easier - - take flask onto ferry if you want a cuppa before bed ask them to fill it with warm water just before docking then you dont even need to switch gas on!!!!!!!!!!!!!we ll try and park near exit to avoid getting blocked in if not well just set alarm for 6 am.

Hhave been on this route a while back befor the tunnel was built. We parked up for the night at the side of the road on the seafront with no problems whatsoever. Nobody bothered us and we had a very pleasant night ! 

Thanks for your replies Blue and Clubman. we do no get into LaHavre until around 9.30pm I think it will be almost 10pm when we finaly get off the ferry. We are setting of to Portsmouth from Leeds at around 10pm 5th July, we are staying at the port in Portsmouth overnight and sail at 3.15pm on the 6th. I know its not ideal but we are saving nearly £70 on the crossing with this sailing time. So when we aventually arrive in LaHavre we will be knackered, this is why we want to stay on the port instead of looking for a site for the night when we get there.

Had the same sort of thing happen to me, driving to the south one year. Got very very foggy couldn't see a thing so pulled on to what I thought was the grass verge and got in the back for a kip.Woke up in morning on a roundabout!!

I know this is going back a bit, but Keith - how did the overnight at the port go ? Where did you stop ? Any hassle ?

We'll be arriving into Le Havre at 10pm or so, was looking at an overnight either at a Formule 1 or camping in Honfleur, but if stopping at the port was viable, I'd consider doing that.
