The Dieppe route used to be lovely - we used it for a few years when we first went to France.  I can't remember who the ferry company was back in those days! I used to like Newhaven and Dieppe's a lovely port with some great restaurants - but you won't see much of that at 4.00 in the morning! 

I'd go for the cheaper crossing, especially as it gets you further south/west - and you can always try to have a sleep on the boat.

Oh happy days!! Newhaven to Dieppe. Newhaven's only 20 mins from my front door and how I remember Sealink's Villandry, Valencey and Senlac as a child off to our summer holidays.
