hi folks, we have finally taken the plunge and booked ferry crossings from Dover to Dunkirk and return from Amsterdam to Newcastle giving us 9 days abroad.

We are now begining to get the jitters as we havent a clue what to take and where to stay.

We have the Montana 6 tent and have always used this in the UK with our trailer, but this isn't an option for us this time due to the increase in cost of the ferry, nor do we have a roof box. We can't just fire it in the boot as the tent bag is huge and then theres the bag for the poles!!

I am looking for a 4 man tent that would be suitable and am swaying towards the Vango Artemis 400, is this a good choice or is it still bulky due to the metal poles? Advice on this would be appreciated.

The other thing I am thinking is would it be better to take 2 small tents as we dont really plan to stay in a place more than 2 nights.

This brings me on to the places to camp, we don't really like big sites with clubs, we prefer the quieter ones. We would like to stay around the Dunkirk Area for the first night, weather this is in France or on the Border of Belgium but we don't know where to start, I have emailed one site in Holland but still havent had a reply after 3 days.

Basically can anyone give us any pointers on the tent and where it would be nice for us to stop as a family 2+2, around Dunkrk, south Holland, around the large national park near Arnham and then over by Harleem.

We stayed over by Wassenaar with Keycamp these llast 2 years as a main holiday but prefer to do some touring this time.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Have a look at De Heide, on the Belgian coast, for your first stop.

i would go for something like the icarus, i have the 600 version and it packs up so small, i really couldnt believe it, only takes around 10 mins to pitch as the bedrooms are already up and inside.
You need to take the basics
sleeping
bedding
cooking
i can get all my stuff in the car with three kids, no roof rack, no trailer. So it can be done.
Which time of year are you going> because if not July/Aug you wouldn't need to book, you could just go with the flow.

Well De Hiedi is completely booked and it wasn't reassuring to hear I've no chance of getting anwhere at this late stage.... Talk about getting stressed before I've even left!!
I then called another site and was told they don't take reservations for tents and just turn up... That's all very well but what if there is no room:-(
Anyway I got booked for 4 nights at Arnham 29th July to 1st August, we then hope to go over to leiden for the last 2 nights then head upto the ferry to return home.
So if anyone can recommend anything around Leiden for our last 2 nights that would be appreciated, also were still stuck for our first 2 nights and would like our first near Dunkirk (which I think will be hard) and the 2nd around rotterdam or utricht so again any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Steven.

Hi Steven

You should be okay finding pitches in July or August even if you've not booked. As teachers we HAVE to go in July/August but we often don't book, even with our caravan - we just phone on up on the day we hope to arrive.

But back to campsites:

In the Dunkerque area we have stayed at

Chateau Gandspette. Quite a large site much favoured by English folk arriving/departing Calais/Dunkerque as it's only about 45 mins away from both. It is a pleasant family site.

Camping Perroquet, just on the border with Holland. This is an ABSOLUTELY HUGE site on the coast with LOTS going on.

This year when we arrive/depart Dunkerque we are staying at nearby Camping La Chaumiere - we've not been there before but it comes highly recommended and the English-speaking owners seeme very friendly and helpful when we phoned to enquire.

Have a super holiday.

Regards
Tim

Probably little point in contacting 't Rietveld, then, which is literally next door and of a similar size!

You may stand a better chance at one of the larger sites, hopefully.

Just an update, were booked 2nd night at Dordrecht, 3/4/5/6 at Arnham (warsborn) yet to get 1, 7 and 8 sorted still.

Also jumped head first at a tent expo today in the lake district, ended up buying the Outwell Virginia 5, as much as I tried to check out reviews on here, I didn't have net access.... So fingers crossed it's a good choice... Time to read the reviews I suppose:-/
