We are travelling to the Loire Valley in August this year (going to Le Chant) from Le Havre and my OH keeps asking me what the tolls will be. We can actaully get there without paying tolls but as we are travelling with two small kids we may want the quickest route.

My questions are:
1/ How much are tolls and does anyone know the approx cost for above journey or a website that will tell me
2/ Is it worth going via non toll roads???

I have no clue how much etxra it will add to our travel cost

Hope someone can help

Angela

You wont regret booking Le Chant! did you read reviews on Tripadvisors? if you like Le Chant and fancy trying Dordogne, i will recommend you a simular site 30 miles north of Sarlat.(Pool, 8 pitches and on site resturant 4 coures 15 euros) If you want to spoil /suprise Stu and Syb, make sure you pack a packet of "jammie dogers"

You have my email address if you want more details

It looks like the tolls could be £26 for a car or £42 for a car and caravan but I would get a good map probably Michelin and maybe do short journeys on the autoroute but most of it on N. Roads.

If you ask Stu at Le Chant he will give you the best route as they are most helpful.

Directions from Le Mans to Le Chant

Coming South (from Le Mans), take the D58 out of Mouliherne towards Vernantes. Take care to turn right at the fork just outside the village! Continue for some miles past a small hamlet named 'l'Oisellerie'. Soon, you'll see a small bus-stop and a wooden cross on your right. This is the crossroads known as 'Croix Justicion', turn left here, past a small cottage (It's signposted for Le Chant d'Oiseau). Take your next right (again signposted). Pass a few farms on your left and right. In around 2 miles, you'll see Le Chant on your left hand side! If you miss this turn, continue for a couple of km's, and turn left opposite 'Plaisance', (you'll see the two blue birds by the entrance to our lane) and we're then on your right after a mile or so!

Thank you thank you! The Michelin guide is excellent as is Vals guide.

In peoples experience are the toll roads ALOT better and alot faster.

Angela

If you are just in a car you can obviously go faster on the Autoroutes and the tolls are cheaper.   The toll road through Le Mans is usually quite empty and you will feel more relaxed when you arrive.    The old N Road alongside has lots of roundabouts and smallish towns to go around but is probably more interesting.

It is up to you but I would go on the Autoroute on the way there and if you have time and it suits you have a meander up part of the N Road on the way back.   You will enjoy Le Chant and they will look after you well.

Have a great time.

Valerie
