The best thing I've ever used for bites is germolene, as it has a mild anaesthetic in it. I've also found that squeeezing out the serum in the bite helps (hurts a bit). I doubt that's medically recommended but it's what I did throughout 10 years of living in africa and australasia, just make sure you put a decent blob of germolene on it afterwards. Scratching doesn't help, just makes things worse and women in particular seem prone to pockmark scars. For prevention, jungle formula was always quite good, but the best of the bunch IMO was RID Insect Repellent, which you'll find here in the uk if you google for it. Seriously good stuff, almost universally used in africa and se asia.

One of the best things for mosquito bites is to get a cloth and put it into hot water. Squeeze out excess water then when it is hot, almost still too hot to bear but not enough to scald, press over the bite for a minute.
The heat works at dissolving the protein in the bite which causes the itching.
If you don't mind the deet then boots own tropical repel will keep them off you. I've never seen mossies swarm before I met OH - even when he's got the spray on they literally swarm above his head looking for a spot to land - he even has to respray his hands after washing them.
I have a horsfly bite and find that taking an antihistamine tablet, (supermarkets own non-drowsy) the type for hayfever, helps enormously. I take it before bed so that the bite doesn't trouble my sleep - I can put up with it in the day by applying anthisan here and there. Taking the tablet works much better than the topical cream.

I find "Witch Doctor" works, but I can't get it here so have to import it and use it sparingly. I will have to look out for Apaisyl, I attract the little dears. Once I had thirty two bites on my face the only exposed part of me, and people were dragging their kids away when I walked down the street.
