If you are a member of the caravan club, many of the centres run rallies on the continent in the summer. It's worth checking the club magazine for details, or even checking the centre's websites. I know a lot of people that go abroad on rallies, they are usually on commercial sites with all the usual ammenities.
My personal opinion is that it is no cheaper than the more conventional way of doing it, but no more expensive either. My experience is that rallies tend to be a lot more friendly and there will be plenty of opportunity to socialise with the other ralliers should you wish or if you prefer to be left alone, you will be under no pressure to join in.
