I think the problem is not necessarily the French campsite but more the way it is transmitted from your computer to theirs. If I understand it correctly the https sends information in encripted form where as without the s it can be intercepted by someone else. But the risk would be if it was done over an open network. So if it is done from a home network with protected access the risk would not be as great. I am surprised that a third party payment taker does not use secure transfer. Perhaps it does if you go further into the process?
