Hi All,
We are planning to visit Italy in September. We would like to go as far as Rome and stop off at Florence (for Hubby) and the gardens of Tivoli (for me) as we work our way back towards home. Apart from that we'd like to get about the countryside as much as we can - we'll be taking our brilliant pop-up so that we can up-sticks easily to be as mobile as poss.
Has anyone done this trip that can recommend any must-see gems/ off the beaten track places and nice little campsites without frills? We are happiest at the end of the day with a bottle of wine and a sunset! Are there any CS type places to camp ?
We have 2 weeks and 5 days saved up and plan to get there as fast as we can with a stop (or 2) then meander our way home slowly.
Very excited and looking forward to it so much!

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

I have done that trip, a friend and I drove to Rome and back in 2 weeks, the first time either of us had driven abroad. We drove down through France, through the Frejus tunnel, down to Genoa, round the coast via the Cinqe Terra, that was a pretty bit. Visited Pisa for the tower, down to Rome, we camped at Prima Porta then went in on the train 2 days running. Back up to Florence, Verona, up the side of Lake Garda, another pretty bit, and over the Brenner Pass to Innsbruck, across Austria, and Germany, and back through northern France. We didn't get to many campsites, mostly slept in the van in lay bys.
It's a long way, there's a lot of driving, and we were often tired, but a great adventure.
