Kelper, you're really making me jealous now!  Can't imagine my kids even walking Fuente De to be honest - they're typical lazy boys!  The youngest moaned all the way round our local reservoir last time he was forced to walk anywhere.  We went horse riding as well in the Picos - riding along picking wild cherries from the trees....aaahh, memories!

As for my kids sharing a single bed - pigs would fly first (and they'd probably get more sleep!)  With Etap, after a bit of searching, we found hotels in just the right places that have family rooms with a double and two singles, and the bathrooms are like a cupboard attached to the room.  Don't think we're paying more than 45 euros for all four of us per night ar any of them, and we won't worry about the breakfast - we'll find a nearby patisserie and pick up some croissants etc on the drive.

Take the ferry!

We use Brittany Ferries to Spain every year.

24hrs from Portsmouth to Santander, arrive refereshed, well fed and well rested. Fairly pricey for us (family of 5) but miles cheaper than 4 hotels and the miles (if you calculate at 40-50p per mile, plus tolls).

Makes a lovely start to the hols, the boat is gorgeous and well appointed, and to wake on the morning of arrival to watch Spain approaching over the horizon is so much more fun than hiking through France.

Have done the France run also: never again, it ruins a holiday. Ferry is cheaper in totla, and much more fun.

We've done both ... several times.
I agree, the boat is fun and relaxing.
Cheaper? NO!

The Ferry would cost us about £550 one way ... you have to get a cabin ... reclining seats are awful and you don't get any sleep with noise etc .. so bang goes the relaxation!
Food and entertainment on board is also not cheap!
Driving, using Dover Dunkirk ... cost of ferry is £62 and petrol/Tolls on Michelin Planner's quickest (i.e. most expensive) route adds £238.49 i.e. a total of £300. Plus add food en route ... total driving time, according to Michelin: 14 hours.
We'll be stopping once ... in the Charente ... have relations who'll put us up for the night.
Even without that, a Formule 1 stop would add another £40.
So for the £250 saving (without adding all the extras you'll pay for on board) ... we'll take the longer route.
Santander is great if you're planning north of Spain ... Costa Verde ... or the West Pyrenees ... but you still have a long drive if you are planning to get over to any of the Med costas.
