We always stop on sites even for the odd night mainly due to the fact of the safety aspect of Aires, can anyone advise are they really as unsafe as people claim? We are going to Lake Garda this year and want to try and get there with as few stopovers as possible so we are contemplating staying on the Aires. There are two families together. Just wondered what everyones view was and if anyone had and advice or experiences they would like to share with us.

Many thanks

We've used aires a couple of times ... never had a problem.
As much a case of ... check the aire out ... how does it feel ... don't be the only ones there ... are there other rigs like yours ... try to avoid ones with loads of lorries ... they can cause problems with noise and (occasionally) bad driving!
Another option is a Formule 1 stop ... very cheap and excellent value.
I'm aware that some people won't use aires for love or for money ... not sure about the position with your insurance if there were to be a problem ... worth checking out?

Like Kelper we always use the Aires and have had no problem, the only problem is the road noise, try get in one with a petrol station, these usually have more space and people around through the night, leave your hitch lock on, and we usually leave the front blind open half way.  Have a nice holiday. You can only make your own mind up on this. If you park anywhere with public access on a main route there is a small chance you will become a victim of crime. If this happens local police will be generally disinterested.

Motorway services & public parking areas on main routes are generally noisy, smelly, with overflowing litterbins & take care as you walk as you might step in summat nasty. Trucks will be driving in & out all night & one could well clout your vehicle as the place gets full.

I only stop at aires to use the woefully inadequate & dirty toilets or I just pee in't nearest bush(when in Rome etc.). Not all services are bad but they become bad at busy periods because of inadequate cleaning. Stop at one on a quiet motorway out of season & it will be ok but on a busy summer weekend it will be vile.

We have often slept in the car in aires, but chose ones on a peage section, thinking that maybe criminals might not want to pay to come robbing. We only travel out of season though.

We never overnight on them - we had heard the reports & Advice and met people who have done it and had break ins. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

I wonder how your insurance would view any problemif you had gone against all authoritive advice and stopped on an aire ane had a break in?

I don't think there is the slightest issue regarding insurance. Using that maxim nobody could stop at any services anywhere! After all, they are rest areas and sleeping is rest.

We quite often use aires and if you take sensible precautions you are no more at risk than anywhere else (unless crime has been eradicated at all campsites, hotels etc). Leave a muggers wallet (consisting of a 5 Euro note and an old expired card) in your van where it can easily be seen by an intruder (if they got in) and you will be no more at risk than a lorry driver in his cab. Just make sure you are sleeping on any valuables.

We used to stay but 3 years but a  lorry driver tried to break into my parents caravan whilst they were sleeping - we were parked directly opposite - would not risk it now - met 2 couples that were gassed as well - south of France definitely the worse so for the price of a site would not risk it.

Rather than stay at an aires on an autoroute couldn't you try and find a 'proper' aires a few km off the autoroute instead?

We bought the vicarious book and used it quite  a few times this easter.  we went for ones off the motorways, felt safe, and enjoyed the experience of waking up in a village, wandering to the boulangerie and eating out on the picnic benches with the locals!!  we would recommend it!!!

I've stayed on Aires plenty of times, just be sensible. Pulled onto one a few years ago, there was just us and another car which looked a bit suspect so we drove off. Since then always used petrol station aires with lots of people and lighting. I've read on this forum about robberies on campsites but I wouldn't stop using them so see no reason not to use aires.

Glad to see people still think they have been gassed

As missmally said, just sensible precautions which is just like parking / staying anywhere. Try and stick to busy aires (Baie de Somme is a good example but there are countless others all over France). A good one is Aire de service du Centre de la France (Farges-Allichamps) on the A71 between Bourges and Clermont Ferrand. Just don't pinch my space there!!
