Depends how far you want to travel and what you look for in a campsite, if you want all singing/dancing sites or just one with a pool, mini golf, table tennis etc.
Been to France at the beginning of July when it wasn't particularly busy, been at end of August and also not particularly busy, would guess it's busiest last 2 weeks of July, first 2 of August.
Well - there are more than half a dozen! Give us a clue ... whereabouts do you fancy going??
French season (sounds a bit like a week in the local cinema!) - the last 2 weeks of July / 1st 2 weeks of August is when it gets busy on most French sites

dont really know where we want to go! havent a clue about regions and only one ive heard of when looking at the map is Brittany! Dont fancy hours upon hours of driving but would like a bit of sunshine (well a chance of it anyway).
If you don't want hours of driving & you are taking a ferry from Dover you are limited to the north coast down a bit from Calais, quite nice if you drive 2hrs down to Baie de Somme area with as much chance of sun as Margate but we could be in for a good summer.
You need to decide where you want to go first as there are campsites with pools everywhere in France.

with reagrds to areas, take a look at the Vendee, fantastic beaches, normally great weather for the time of year youre going, its around 6 hours drive from Calais, if that sint too much?
lots of great sites, some all singing all dancing brit orientated, lots of sites that cater mainly for french families with a few brits here and there - i suggest making a decision on how far/long you want to drive and do a search for suitable areas (seaside/inland waterways/lakes etc etc) that takes in that sort of time scale - that will at least give you a clue on where you should be looking. then check out campsites in the area
we are just back from Le Ranolien in Brittany ( Plymouth - Roscoff ferry, short drive once in France) it's a fab site for kids in terms of sports / pools etc
but also stunning coastline ( fab walks / beaches etc )
lovely ports / marinas etc and fabulous restaurants!
What we do to find good family campsites is to look on Keycamp, Canvas ect, to look at the area, sites and whats on them, then google the sites direct for prices ect, done this 3 times now and it has never let us down.
I would have to agree with Dave The Vendee last year was fab, but would me a little more expensive, so much for the kids to do though was worth the extra, the best weather we have ever had aswell to boot.
The Vendee has been brilliant the last two years at easter aswell, really hot, though i am not so sure i would like to be in a tent in the night then! August is pretty busy, but so is everywhere half decent that time of year, Last two weeks in August it starts to get quieter but has been great weather the last 4 years - we have had the odd cloudy day and slight rain but it soon clears - especally mid afternoon into the evening, i assume because its the west coast?
as you are in kent i assume you will be doing dover - calais - to check mileages/travel time etc use viamichelin, it gives you a reasonable idea of how long it will take plus an approximate cost, that might help you make a decision -

Our first trip to France, quite a few years ago, was done as a package through camping & caravan club. It's a fairly safe option; you get discounted ferry, plus emergency support from the club if you need it. (You'll usually recoup membership fee at least.) The bias seems to be toward family oriented sites, and the brochure gives you a reasonable idea of what you're getting.
OH and I prefer to go south of the Loire/Dijon to get better weather & scenery. But the smaller autoroutes are a pleasure to drive compared to motorways, so take it gently and watch the scenery roll by for a while - the journey should be part of the holiday, and there are 11500 campsites in France!
We'll be near Montpellier this summer, after a two-day journey, not pushing it.
We just got back from La Garangeoire in The Vendee yesterday, we had a fantastic holiday, 9 days of wall to wall sunshine - it started to rain on our last night but I'm sure it will pick up again soon as it's supposed to be the 'sunshine coast'. It took us around 7 hours from Dunkirk. We loved it so much we're going back next year! There's loads of photos of our holiday on another thread on here

2013
March - Pooley Bridge (Pod booked!)
May - Spiers House, Pickering
June - La Garangeoire, Vendee, France
Aug - The Cotswolds?
French season for the Brits I suppose is end July, beginning of August. But the French are on their holidays from the weekend of the 14th for 2 weeks. Dont drive on the beginning weekend or the end one unless you want to sit in a huge traffic jam .... we did that last year and were stuck in a near 200 mile jam from Lille to the coast!
