Harwich to Esbjerg (Denmark)with DFDS, then drive to Copenhagen, then either ferry to Oslo or ferry to Sweden and drive up the coast to Norway.
Sounds a nice trip!
Newcastle to Bergen i believe, they certainly were doing that route two years ago with Scandinavian Seaways.
We love Norway too, but mostly explore it via the Coastal voyage ships, or for next year by the Thomson cruiseship upto the North Cape of Finmark and the land of the midnight sun.

thats what i thought i remember seeing a newcastle to kristiansand aswell but cant find anything now..
Only service from Newcastle that I know of is to Ijmuiden / Netherlands. But look at the separate DFDS freight website for those freight services, which include routes to both both Norway and Sweden
Newcastle Bergen crossing has been terminated!
I first used it in the sixties ... the ship was called the Venus ... was lovingly called the 'Vomiting Venus' becuae of the notorious Northe Sea crossing ... wonderful sail up Bergen fjord in the early morning .... sadly missed.

We have sailed the Newcastle to Bergen route a few times, and luckily we have never had a rough crossing either way. They did stop the sailings from the port for the last two years, but are recomencing them for 2012 for the Thomson ships by popular demand, so im wondering if the ferry will do likewise. in the past the two ships have both sailed within about an hour of eachother and followed similar routes.

Lol...this is the grafters route we did last year because we had planned to go the Newcastle route and as others say it was discontinued and all else seemed such a faff as we had a lot of route planning before hand to ensure we made the most of our time, I gave up the will to live trying to sort the ferry. We like driving by the way.... So we ( two and a young teen) just did the usual Ferry to Calais and then bombed it up overland to the Arctic Circle. Obviously there were added petrol costs but they were off set by the ease of journey/route and it was quite quick. We were really relaxed and stopped when we wanted so when we got to the Arctic circle we felt very excited and as if we'd really had an adventure.
We were just the car and a three person tent though.
Overnight first night Copenhagen, second night Trondheim and third night about 30k just outside Mo i Rana. We then toured for the remaining 14 days Norway (including Arctic circle up to Bodo, Bergen & Oslo and on the route home did a planned stopover and sight see in Copenhagen).
We got in two glaciers, fjords on the internal ferry system, 2 days Bergen and 4 days in/around Oslo area, two of those big Viking wooden carved churches and 10 museums and exhibition including Kontiki, Viking Ship, Munch and the Nobel Peace Centre...there was so much to do we got the Oslo Pass(public transport including some ferries and free entry into the museums and exhibs).
Only place we didn't get to that we might have liked was around Stavanger area ..and that's because we needed the two days for Copenhagen at the end of the holiday.
worst bit of road ( supposed to be A road but was undergoing major repair so was a pitted track with towing people gripping their steering wheels in fright from waht we could see of their faces through the windscreen) was between Lillehammer and Trondheim somewhere ... but given the efficiency of the Norwegians should imagine that;s complete by now.
Have a great time!

Hi do you know if they are still planning on bringing back this ferry route?
Cheers
When went we drove it drove it over a few days and it was great ,ferry to Dunkerque and the headed North via Belgium,Holland,Germany and then up in to Scandanavia and if you like driving and bridges it's a great drive particularly the great belt bridge which is amazing
Want to head back and take the kids as its an amazing place
I've read in my newly purchased Germany Lonely Planet guide book (latest edition) a route from Germany to Norway via ferry approx 255 euro's. I'm sorry I cannot quote the wording or name the ferry company as I have lent the book to my mum and she's on holiday.
I've just had a look online and it's Kiel to Oslo and it's run by Color Lines. It might be quicker than driving!

aferry website This route is no longer available. However, alternatives are available, to reach Norway you could take the ferry from Harwich (Essex) to Esbjerg in Denmark. From here you could drive to Hirtshals and take the ferry from Hirtshals to Kristiansand.
We got the ferry to Dunkirk, then drove to Hirtshals.
On the way back we traveled from Kristiansand to Hirtshals and then the Hook of Holland (which is my favourite ferry) back to the UK.
